Internships

Internships are designed to provide MiraCosta students with workplace experience and new skills. The Internship Program offers business, industry, and organizations the talents and energy of students who not only contribute to workforce development but strengthen the link between the educational and business communities.

The program benefits students, faculty, and the academic programs by linking classroom learning to the work world, providing opportunities for mentor relationships, and adding significant work experience to students' resumes.

The student Intern

  • Completes 6 units at MiraCosta prior to applying for an internship.
  • Enrolls in a minimum of 3 units in addition to the Internship Studies units (not required in summer term).
  • Develops workplace learning objectives with the instructor.
  • Meets with the instructor at the internship site twice during the semester. (At the beginning of the internship and at the end of the semester)
  • Completes monthly hours reports on Blackboard verifying time worked: a minimum of 60 hours for every 1 unit of credit (non-paid) up to 3 units (180 hours); and 75 hours for every 1 unit of credit (paid) up to 3 units (225 hours).
  • Completes required assignments.

The Employer

  • Provides a learning environment and experience for the student intern.
  • Offers training and guidance to the student intern
  • Is encouraged, but not required, to pay a salary or stipend to the student intern.
  • Meets with the student's instructor at the beginning of the internship and at the end to evaluate the student's progress.
  • Verifies that required hours have been completed by the student
  • Writes a summary of the internship experience.

The Instructor

  • Identifies competent students to apply for the internship, in consultation with the internship coordinator.
  • Serves as the teacher of record and mentor for the student enrolled in Internship Studies.
  • Develops workplace learning objectives with the student.
  • Meets with the student twice during the semester.
  • Reviews the student's work, evaluates accomplishment of learning objectives, verifies that required hours have been completed, and assigns a grade.

Internship Course Credit

Can be earned in any discipline listed in the college catalog as Internship Studies 292.
