General Networking

Fall 2009

There are several options available for fall 2009.  Choose the one that fits your schedule and available study time.

1)
A one semester program to complete 2 courses (8 weeks each) that prepare students for CCENT exam (part one of CCNA).  These courses meet on Monday + Wednesday evenings from 6:00- 9:00 pm.  This class begins August 24th.  IT IS NOT AN OPEN ENTRY CLASS.  This is a fast-paced class covering about 2 chapters per week.  This class meets on Monday + Wednesday evenings from 6 – 9pm.  Register for NCVOC 66 class #3196 for the first 8 weeks.  This is an excellent starting point for those who want to increase their knowledge and/or begin a career in IT networking.

2)
Open Entry CCNA– There will be lectures on Tuesdays evenings and Saturday mornings (repeat).  Students are able to begin at any time before November 1st.  This course offers schedule flexibility and allows for a slower pace (1 chapter per week.)  The classroom/lab is also open on Thursday evenings.  Register for NCVOC 11 class # 3175.  There is a $3 materials fee that must be paid to complete registration.

3)
Online/hybrid CCNA – This provides the most schedule flexibility.  However, it also requires the discipline to do the work and participate online.  Three meetings will be held on campus.  The mandatory orientation will be held on Saturday Sept. 12th from 9am – 11:30.  Register for NCVOC 11 class # 3177.  There is a $3 materials fee that must be paid to complete registration.  Please do not wait until day of orientation to register – the class may be cancelled before 1st meeting if registrations are low.
4)

Practical networking for Home/Small Office – general interest

This is an 8 week class that familiarizes everyday people with basic networking concepts and operations for the small or home office.  This is a good class for those who want a better understanding of setting up their small network and troubleshooting.  This class begins August 24th and meets on Monday + Wednesday evenings from 6 – 9 pm for 8 weeks.  You do not need to be a network or IT person to take this course as it is designed for beginners.  (Students do need to have an email address and know how to access the Internet.)  It is somewhat technical but practical.  Register for NCVOC 66 class #3196 for the first 8 weeks.

                   About the Cisco Networking Academy

Cisco Logo

The Academy offers classes that prepare students for computer industry certifications.  The Academy program is not a quick, ‘here are the test answers’ bootcamp approach.  Coursework builds skills and in-depth knowledge.  We have Cisco equipment in the lab that gives you hands-on, real world experience.

Remote lab equipment access on the Internet

Students will receive an account to access routers and switches on the Internet.  Lab exercises will be completed using real equipment, not simulators.  Work can be completed 24/7 using your Internet access.  Students may also use equipment in the campus lab.

All instructors are Cisco certified.

The CCNA (Cisco Certified Networking Associate) is an entry-level certification that indicates knowledge of small network installations.  There are 4 courses that take beginning students with little or no networking knowledge and prepare them for jobs in the Information Technology field.  For those with some experience, the coursework adds to skills and builds in-depth knowledge.

MiraCosta College also offers classes to prepare students for the CCNP (Cisco Certified Networking Professional) intermediate level certification.  CCNP students must have completed the 4 CCNA courses or hold a CCNA certification.

Recertification – For those who wish to re-certify, we offer the opportunity to cover new test topics that have been added in the last 3 years.  It is not necessary for those recertifying to complete all 4 courses.  Students are generally advised to enroll in CCNA3.

About bootcamps–These are typically one week long, intense sessions.  They are designed for and appropriate for those with significant industry experience who need to focus on preparing for an exam.

We frequently have students who have attended a bootcamp come and say that they now find that they really need to know and understand the material and concepts.
