Cisco Networking Academy

Free noncredit computer networking classes

The Academy offers classes that prepare students for computer industry employment and certifications.  The Academy program is not a quick, “here are the test answers” bootcamp approach.  Coursework and labs build skills and in-depth knowledge.  We have Cisco equipment in the lab that gives you hands-on, real world experience.

Remote lab equipment access on the Internet

Students will receive an account to access routers and switches on the Internet (except first course – NCVOC11).  Lab exercises will be completed using real equipment, not simulators.  Work can be completed 24/7 using your Internet access.  Students may also use equipment in the campus lab.

All instructors are Cisco certified.

MiraCosta College offers classes to prepare students for the following Cisco certifications:

  • CCENT™ -- Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician certification validates the ability to install, operate and troubleshoot a small enterprise branch network, including basic network security. With a CCENT, a network professional demonstrates the skills required for entry-level network support positions - the starting point for many successful careers in networking. (This is also the first ½ of the CCNA certification. Two courses are required.)
  • CCNA™ -- Cisco Certified Network Associate certification validates the ability to install, configure, operate, and troubleshoot medium-size route and switched networks, including implementation and verification of connections to remote sites in a WAN. CCNA curriculum includes basic mitigation of security threats, introduction to wireless networking concepts and terminology, and performance-based skills. This new curriculum also includes (but is not limited to) the use of these protocols: IP, Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP), Serial Line Interface Protocol Frame Relay, Routing Information Protocol Version 2 (RIPv2),VLANs, Ethernet, access control lists (ACLs).  (Four courses total are required, 2 beyond the CCENT preparation.)

  • CCNP™  --  Cisco Certified Network Professional validates the ability to plan, implement, verify and troubleshoot local and wide-area enterprise networks and work collaboratively with specialists on advanced security, voice, wireless and video solutions. The CCNP certification is appropriate for those with at least one year of networking experience who are ready to advance their skills and work independently on complex network solutions. Those who achieve CCNP have demonstrated the skills required in enterprise roles such as network technician, support engineer, systems engineer or network engineer.

  • Recertification – Generally certifications are valid for 3 years.  For those who wish to re-certify, we offer the opportunity to cover new test topics that have been added in the last 3 years.  It is not necessary for those recertifying to complete all courses.  Students who are recertifying should call for advisement as to which course to enroll in.

  • About bootcamps–These are typically one week long, intense sessions.  They are designed for and appropriate for those with significant industry experience who need to focus on preparing for an exam.  MiraCosta College and Cisco Academies do NOT offer bootcamp programs

We frequently have students who have attended a bootcamp come and say that they now find that they really need to understand and practice the material and concepts.

Location – All Cisco classes are held at the Community Learning Center at 1831 Mission Ave in Oceanside.  Room numbers are CLC133 (classroom) and CLC132 (lab).
