Cosmetology

MiraCosta College partners with the Oceanside College of Beauty to offer certification in cosmetology. Students enroll in the program through MiraCosta College, but the course itself is held at the Oceanside College of Beauty, located at 1575 S. Coast Highway.  The Oceanside College of Beauty requires students to be at least 18 years of age and to have a high school diploma or its equivalent (GED).

To earn the Cosmetology Certificate from MiraCosta College, students must complete Cosmetology 150, 151, and 152 for a total of 44 units, a time commitment of two regular semesters and one summer session. New classes start every six weeks (beginning in late summer), with the last class of the year beginning in early spring.  Classes meet from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday at the Oceanside College of Beauty, located at 1575 S. Coast Highway.

By completing these 44 units, students fulfill not only the 1,600 hours of theory and practice required by the State of California Cosmetology Act, but also the licensing requirements of the Board of Cosmetology.

Students may choose to earn an Associate Degree in cosmetology by completing additional general education units. Students may also benefit from taking classes in business, accounting, and entrepreneurship.

Steps for Enrollment

  1. Step 1:  Call the Oceanside College of Beauty at (760) 757-6161, ext. 13 to schedule an appointment to meet with the Registrar, Heather Fair.  Once your appointment has been confirmed, Heather will meet with you, give you a tour of the facility, provide an overview of the program, and then give you a brief admissions test.  She will also discuss with you the next available start date.
  2. Step 2:  Once you pass the admissions test, you will be directed to MiraCosta College's Admissions and Records Department (Building 3300) to apply for admission by completing the MiraCosta Credit Class application.  If you are interested in inquiring about potential eligibility for financial aid, you will want to check with the Financial Aid Department in the 3000 Building (located directly across from Admissions and Records) at this time as well, or you may call (760) 757-2121, ext. 6711.
  3. Step 3: Approximately 4-5 weeks prior to your start date, Heather will contact you to confirm your participation in the program.
  4. Step 4: Approximately 3 weeks prior to the class start date, you will be required to come to the Office of Instruction, Building 4700 at MiraCosta College, to pick up a permit that will allow you to enroll in the cosmetology program.  Any changes in plans (i.e., deciding not to enroll in the program after all) from this point on must be communicated to Heather at the Oceanside College of Beauty so she can give your spot to someone else.
  5. Step 5: Take your permit to the Admissions and Records Office (Building 3300) at MiraCosta College's Oceanside campus to enroll in the program and pay your enrollment fee.
