English as a Second Language (ESL)

The Credit ESL Program focuses on providing advanced skill development and College Academic Preparation to students whose first language is other than English.  Our program provides students with the tools and techniques they need to reach their goals, whether they be academic preparation, workplace improvement, or personal enrichment.

CREDIT ESL IS DESIGNED FOR STUDENTS WHO:

  • Want to improve their English for success in college classes, work, or in the community.
  • Are considering earning a degree or certificate, or are taking other credit classes.
  • Need higher-level English skills.
  • Enjoy the flexibility of attending classes one or two days per week.
  • Desire specialized ESL courses like pronunciation, composition, grammar, vocabulary development, and more.

Currently, we offer five credit courses in English for non-native speakers on our Oceanside and San Elijo campuses. Our two writing classes, ESL 802 and 803, develop composing skills necessary for advancement to transfer-level (English 100) coursework. In addition, we offer a Listening & Speaking Skills course (ESL 810) an English Grammar course (ESL 820), and a new course, Reading & Vocabulary Development (ESL 815). Please visit the Course Catalog for further information.  Classes are offered morning, afternoons, and evenings.

Our faculty's mission is your success! We work to provide you with the tools and techniques you will need to reach your goals whether they be academic preparation, workplace improvement, or personal enrichment.

Although all our classes are open to students (except ESL 803 which requires completion of ESL 802 or placement test score), students new to our program are advised to complete a matriculation process when they apply to attend or first enroll in classes. This process includes taking the ESL Assessment which directs students to the appropriate level of classes.
