Credit by Exam-Spanish

Credit by examination:

This is your best option if you are already proficient in a foreign language and all you need is the units to satisfy a requirement.  No attendance is necessary (i.e., you might dedicate this time to taking another course or meeting another requirement).

As long as you are currently enrolled in at least three units of work at MiraCosta College, you can receive credit for any of the following courses by taking its final exam (usually offered at the end of the semester):

  • FREN 101 and 102
  • SPAN 101, 102, 201, 202, 203 and 204.
  • Currently, the International Languages Dept. at MiraCosta College does not offer credit by exam in Chinese, German, Italian or Japanese.  (You might want to check with another college to see if they do.)

Start the process by discussing this option with your academic advisor, who will be the first person to sign off on a "Credit by Institutional Examination" form. You should talk to your counselor as early as possible in the semester. All paperwork must be completed and received by Admissions & Records by the end of the sixth week of classes (3rd week in the summer session).

During the summer, Credit by Exam test will be administered at the ILRC (OC4701) on Tuesday of the 6th and 8th weeks of instruction.  Please check with your instructor for times.

IMPORTANT NOTE:   Once you have signed for a Credit by Exam, the grade assigned to you if you do not take the test within the prescribed time frame will be an “F”.

  • Students must allow 2 hours for completion of the test and oral interview.

Intermediate and Advanced Spanish Courses

  • SPAN 201/202 (Intermediate Spanish):  Spanish 201 (Third Semester) is for students who have completed Spanish 3 in high school, though students with Spanish 4 are still allowed to "drop down" one level and take the course.  Spanish 202 (Fourth Semester) is for students at the Span 4 and/or AP levels.  It is also an appropriate course for native speakers as well as heritage speakers of Spanish.

  • SPAN 203/204 (Spanish for Native Speakers):  This course has been designed for students who grew up speaking Spanish, attended school in a Spanish-speaking country, etc. It focuses mainly on writing, reading and the problems heritage or native speakers typically encounter.
