LVN-RN Career Ladder Nursing Program

We have an established waitlist and are currently accepting applications for July 2009.

Please note: The California State Chancellor's Office has changed the Math Prerequisite requirement from Math100 (Elementary Algebra) to Math101 (Intermediate Algebra) for classes beginning in July 2009.

Eligibility Requirements for the LVN-RN Program: 

ALL of the following must be met in order to be eligible to APPLY to the LVN-RN Career Ladder Program.

  • California Vocational Nursing License in good standing
  • At least 6 months work experience as an LVN by the time class starts
  • Overall cumulative grade point average (G.P.A.) of 2.5 for all college coursework
  • Completion of the following science PREREQUISITES with a combined G.P.A. of 2.5 with no grade less than "C" for each course and no more than one repetition for a substandard grade or withdrawal in any one of the 3 courses:
    • Human Anatomy (BIO 210) – 4 semester units or equivalent
    • Human Physiology (BIO 220) – 4 semester units or equivalent 
    • Microbiology (BIO 230) – 4 - 5 semester units or equivalent
      Note: Physiology and Microbiology must be completed within 10 years preceding qualifying date of eligibility.
  • Completion of the following PREREQUISITES with a grade of no less than “C”
    • Composition and Reading (ENGL 100) – 4 semester units or equivalent
    • Intermediate Algebra (Math101) – 4 semester units or equivalent (or a passing score on the Math Placement Test)
  • Students who do not meet the G.P.A. or course repetition requirement should check with the Nursing Department for other options.

Transcript Requirement: 

  • One official transcript in a sealed envelope from each college and university attended, including MiraCosta College, must be submitted with your application to the program. 

Foreign Transcripts: 

  • All foreign transcripts must be evaluated by the International Education Research Foundation www.ierf.org, a credential evaluation service for determining U.S. equivalency.  If a foreign degree was earned, the evaluation must state its equivalency to a U.S. degree.  The use of an evaluation service is a requirement, even if the transcript is in English. 

Application and Selection Process: 

  • Applications are accepted on an on-going basis and students are added to the established list in the order their completed application was accepted by the Nursing Department. First consideration will be given to those who have completed all the General Education requirements for an Associate’s Degree.
  • Submit your completed application packet in person to the secretary in the Allied Health Administrative Office in Bldg. T420. Please call for appointment prior to submission at (760) 795-6796.
  • In order to be considered eligible, all applicants must:  (1) meet the eligibility requirements above, (2) supply needed documentation for equivalency determination, and (3) comply with all requests for paperwork.

Applicant responsibilities:

  • Comply with requirements and deadlines and submit a complete application package;
  • Respond to requests for clarification or documentation;
  • Maintain currency and accuracy of file, including:
    •  name, address, email, and/or telephone number changes

       AND

    •  transcripts (updated to include courses completed after applying)
  • Complete the application - incomplete or unsigned application packages will not be considered.

Denial of Licensure: 

  • The California Board of Registered Nursing may deny a license regulated by the Business and Professional Code, Section 480, on such grounds as:  being convicted of a crime, acts of dishonesty, fraud or deceit.  All students selected for enrollment in the nursing program will be assessed for past criminal activity prior to clinical experiences.  Please contact the Program Director if you have questions.

For applicants who are notified that they have been accepted for enrollment in the program (not those wait listed), there are additional requirements:

    • Health Requirements:  Applicants selected for enrollment in the program must have a physical examination, laboratory tests, and immunizations just prior to starting the Nursing Program.  The student must be free from communicable diseases, infections, and must be able to perform the essential requirements of the program with or without reasonable accommodations for disability.
    • Orientation and Advisement Session must be attended once accepted for enrollment in the program. 
    • Testing Requirement:  Effective Fall 2008, all LVN-RN students must pass the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS).  This is a diagnostic test that covers basic Math, Reading, and Science. Students who fail to achieve a passing score must complete additional pre-nursing course work as directed by the nursing department. Students may prepare for this test by going to the ATI testing site (http://www.atitesting.com/)  and then go to ASSESSMENTS; go to Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS). The TEAS test will be given by the nursing faculty prior to starting the nursing program at a time set by the nursing department.

    ALL nursing  students in ALL programs will be required to complete the background check and urine drug screen BEFORE BEGINNING THE NURSING PROGRAMS IN SAN DIEGO - THIS IS A HOSPITAL/HEALTH CARE AGENCY REQUIREMENT. Students will be given the information to obtain these requirements at the orientation and advisement.
