Mission Statement
Philosophy
Accepting responsibility for your own health and controlling your own lifestyle are the keys to better health today. If there is a single key to wellness, it would be to seek and attain a moderate balance in all aspects of personal health and well-being.
Goals
Achieving and maintaining a level of performance at or above the 70th percentile on each fitness test is a reasonable goal for most people.
Program Elements
There are three essential elements in the wellness approach. These include evaluation, education and action.
- Evaluation has a medical as well as fitness component. Regular medical checkups become increasingly important, especially as we enter our middle years. Many key health-related factors can be monitored easily and inexpensively. Fitness tests are the second component of the evaluation process. The Fitness Center testing program includes tests of cardiovascular and respiratory fitness, body composition, blood pressure, strength, flexibility, and muscular endurance.
- Education is the second phase of a total wellness program. Structured classes, seminars, books and articles all provide good sources for expanding your health knowledge. Check your college catalog and contact the Fitness Center desk to determine what is available at your college.
- Action is the third and perhaps most important component of a solid wellness program. Action includes exercise, modifying diet, stopping smoking, and controlling blood pressure. Action programs will be offered through the Fitness Center, via other college programs and in the community via public health and private agencies.
