Visiting Team Bios

Victoria Atherton
Victoria Atherton has been the Library Director at Evergreen Valley College in San Jose, CA since 1990. Recent projects at Evergreen Valley College include design and construction of a new Library/Educational Technology Center Scheduled to open Spring 2004, development of a local Evergreen community Heritage Room for the new library, and co-chair of the campus accreditation self study scheduled for fall 2004 visit.

Judith V. Branzburg
Dr. Judith V. Branzburg is an associate professor of English at Pasadena City College where she has taught composition and literature for thirteen years. Specializing in modern and contemporary texts, she has published a number of articles and reviews. Dr. Branzburg has also served as coordinator of adjunct instructors in the English Division for seven years and has recently participated in a state wide program to design on-line training for adjunct faculty. Dr. Branzburg has also been active in PCC initiatives regarding curriculum renovation, multicultural studies, high school preparation for college, and pedagogical strategies. Over the past few years, she has also participated in PCC’s study abroad program in Oxford, England and Florence, Italy. The visit to Mira Costa College will be her fourth accreditation visit.

Larry Brown
Larry Brown is the Vice President of Student Services at San Diego City College where he has also served as chief administrative officer in the absence of the President (Interim President December 1992 to February 1993). Departments in the division include Student Development, Student Affairs, Learning Resources including Library, Independent Learning Center, and Multimedia Services, Counseling, Admissions and Registration, Financial Aid, EOPS, Job Placement, Disabled Student Program and Services, Student Health Services and previously Intercollegiate Athletics.

Kathy Donnell
Kathy Donnell is the Executive Assistant to Dr. Richard Giese at Mt. San Jacinto College. Kathy serves as the liaison for all communications between the President, District personnel, the Board of Trustees and the community at large. Kathy has been at MSJC for approximately nine years. Before moving to the President’s office she worked in the MSJC Instruction and Business Service offices. She recently participated in her second “Charrette,” a vital part of developing a Master Plan for the college through 2010.

Sharon Dyer
Dr. Sharon Dyer has served in a variety of positions in community colleges during the past 35 years. She began her career in community college education in 1970 when she taught speech and debate for Yakima Valley Community College. While at Yakima, she also developed a program for returning women students and served as its Director for five years. Additionally, she was responsible for Continuing Education and directed programs in eleven different cities concurrently. In 1988, she became the Chief Academic officer for the Yakima College. In 1989, Dr. Dyer left Yakima to assume the position of Chief Academic Officer for Blue Mountain Community College. She held that position for eight years. She then moved to Crescent City, California where she held the position of Vice President for the Del Norte campus of College of the Redwoods for five years. Dr. Dyer began her new position as President of Cerro Coso Community College in July 2002.

Rodney Fleeman
Dr. Rodney Fleeman, Vice-Chancellor, Finance and Facilities, for the North Orange County Community College District. Dr. Fleeman is in his fourth year as Vice Chancellor, Finance and Facilities, of the District. Prior to working with the District, he was Vice President of Administrative Services at Pasadena City College. Dr. Fleeman holds a Ph.D. in Higher Education and a Master’s and Bachelor’s of Education in Vocational-Technical Education from Colorado State University.

Jan Ford
Jan Ford is a Mathematics Instructor at Cuyamaca College in El Cajon, CA where she has also served as the Chair of Mathematics, Science and Engineering; Matriculation and Learning Skills Program Coordinator; Steering Committee Member for Accreditation Self Study; and Academic Senate President. Jan also serves as the Chair for the AMATYC Foundation and is a member of the Mathematical Association of America as well as the California Mathematics Council.

Richard Giese [Chair of the 2004 Accreditation Team Visit]
Dr. Richard J. Giese became the Superintendent/President of Mt. San Jacinto College on July 1, 2000. He is the fifth person to hold that position in the 40-year history of the college. Since arriving at MSJC, Dr. Giese has been active in the many communities located within the 1700 square-mile district served by the college.

With more than 30 years of experience in higher education, Dr. Giese has established himself as an effective leader and dedicated administrator with a strong commitment to the mission of community colleges. He served eight years as president of Reedley College until 1997, when he was named Vice Chancellor of three community college centers in the State Center Community College District in Fresno, CA, where he was responsible for administration, instruction, student support and maintenance. His other academic experience includes serving as Dean of Students, Dean of Educational Services and Dean of Academic affairs at Reedley College

Eva Kinsman
Eva Kinsman is a retired educator, having served as teacher and principal at both elementary and secondary schools. Mrs. Kinsman also taught for the University of Redlands for seven years as an adjunct faculty member. Her WASC experience includes 23 years of service as a team member or chairperson. She is currently the president of the Board of Trustees for Copper Mountain College. The highlight of her career was her role of principal/leader in the establishment of the first charter school in Southern California in 1992.

Morgan Lynn
Dr. Morgan Lynn has been Assistant Superintendent and Vice President of Educational Programs and Services of Sierra Community College District since July 2001. In this capacity Dr. Lynn oversees all aspects of the Educational Programs and Services Department, which includes: Curriculum and Instruction, Liberal Arts, Business and Technology, Sciences and Mathematics, Physical Education and Athletics, Student Development and Student Support.

Dean Tsuruda
Mr. Dean Tsuruda is a general counselor at Modesto Junior College. He has been a counselor for 29 years and has been involved in many leadership positions at Modesto Junior College. For six years, Mr. Tsuruda was the Coordinator for the career Development Center, and was instrumental in combining career and placement services together. The facilities were remodeled, and services improved to include computerized career services. Mr. Tsuruda chaired the first Crisis Intervention Team on campus for three years. He has served as the Academic Senate President (two terms), and has served the Yosemite Faculty Association as its Vice President/Grievance Officer, Treasurer and Chief Negotiator for seven years. Currently, he is coordinating the on-line guidance course program for the Counseling Department, a program he helped to create. He holds a Master’s of Science degree in Counseling from California State University at Los Angeles. He completed his undergraduate work at Occidental College. This will be his sixth accreditation team visitation.

Linda Umbdenstock
Dr. Linda Umbdenstock is Administrative Dean of Planning at Long Beach City College and past president of the RP Group of the California Community Colleges. She received her B.A. from Alverno College and her Ph.D. in Systems Sciences from Portland State University. In her over 25 years in research and planning in higher education, she has started two college offices related to planning and research, served on many statewide projects and helped develop the California Assessment Institute and the RP Group workshop series on student learning outcomes. Her experience also includes policy analysis, systems development, implementation and evaluation, and innovative network organizations. She has written and consulted on planning issues, multi-perspective decision-making, and practices yielding outcomes in education, health, and human services. She has served on four previous accreditation teams, is an accreditation liaison, and co-leads her college's self-study.
