Dr. David Broad, Vice President, Genentech (Retired)
“In the U.S., the big sin is not to try” is a mantra David lives in both his professional and personal lives. Originally from England, he emigrated to the United States in 1993 with his wife Tina and young son Joe to take a job in a San Francisco area biotech firm. He moved to North San Diego County in 2000 to go to work for IDEC which became Genentech over time. During his eight year tenure there he became deeply involved with science education projects at MiraCosta College and was instrumental in the creation of the biotech program. He even arranged for MiraCosta staff to learn the biotech business by working at Genentech. The company also partially funded a biotech instructor position for the first five years, along with building a laboratory and supplying lab equipment, thus marrying David’s passion for science with his practical penchant for making things.
