BIOGRAPHY OF GUEST SPEAKER,
DEAN CALBREATH
Dean Calbreath is an award-winning business reporter for The San Diego Union-Tribune. He is responsible for covering the U.S. economy, financial institutions and international trade, focusing largely on the Pacific Rim.
He came to San Diego in 1997 after four years in Prague, where
he wrote for the European edition of The Wall Street Journal and Business Central Europe, a publication owned by London's Economist magazine. Prior to living in Prague, he covered law and business for
a number of publications in California, Texas and the Washington,
D.C., area. Topics he has covered include the Middle East after September 11, the rise of China, Japan's recession and recovery, the
disintegration of Yugoslavia, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the expansion
of the European Union and the Asian financial crisis of 1997-98.
Calbreath co-authored The Wrong Stuff: The Extraordinary Saga of Randy "Duke" Cunningham, the Most Corrupt Congressman Ever Caught. He and three other members of the team of San Diego Union-Tribune journalists were awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Journalism for their investigation of the Cunningham bribery case.
Calbreath earned his degree in Social Science from Laney College in Oakland, California. He also worked for The Daily Californian and other publications at the University of California, Berkeley.
