"Once Upon a Mattress"
MiraCosta’s Theatre Department presents “Once Upon a Mattress,” directed by Tracy Williams.
“Once Upon a Mattress” tells the story of Princess Winifred, who leaves her kingdom in the swamps and swims across a royal moat to meet Dauntless, the prince of her dreams. But his domineering mother, Queen Aggravaine, won’t let her son near the soggy princess unless she can pass a sensitivity test and prove she is a genuine princess.
“This is an action-packed play with lots of dancing and singing,” says Williams. “It’s the perfect family play: children will love the story and there is a lot of adult humor that the ‘grown-ups’ will enjoy.”
“Once Upon a Mattress” is a hilarious spoof of Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Princess and the Pea.” The play took the New York theatre world by storm in 1959 and made the very young Carol Burnett a star. With its sparkling score by Mary Rodgers, daughter of famed composer Richard Rodgers, “Once Upon a Mattress” is a musical theatre classic.
“Once Upon a Mattress” stars Gerilyn Brault as Winnifred, Justin Jorgensen as Dauntless and Amanda Dane as Queen Aggravaine. Other MiraCosta College actors featured in this play include Kyle Lucy, Jessie Brodie, Sergio Luna, Lee Pollero, Aleks Awad, Aimee Burdette, Garrett Bales, Carlos Darze, Brent Stratton, Kyle Marks, James Bohardt, Teddy Blessing, Eve Bakeman, Jamie Hunt, Amanda Lamson, Hayley Palmer, Meg Johnson, Ali Robbins-Goddard, Ashlee Whitehead and Jill Renner.
“Once Upon a Mattress” will be performed in the MiraCosta College Theatre, 1 Barnard Drive, Oceanside on February 29 and March 1, 6, 7, 8 at 7:30 p.m. as well as March 2 and 9 at 2 p.m.
General admission is $12; seniors/staff, $10; and students, $8. A preview performance is scheduled for February 28 at 7:30 p.m., all seats are $8.
