MiraCosta College Student Artists Exhibit Paintings in "Fourteen Weeks"
Accomplished MiraCosta College art students Mary Ann May, Rebecca McIntire, and Valentina Ferguson will showcase their recent oil paintings in a group exhibition entitled “Fourteen Weeks.” The exhibit will have a limited run May 19-21 in MiraCosta’s Kruglak Gallery, located in the Student Center on the Oceanside campus, at 1 Barnard Drive.
Each artist will exhibit an individual series of oil paintings dealing with personal and social issues. May’s series is a visual narrative of elementary school life; McIntire’s installation, “Don’t See Me,” is an expression of her lifelong struggle with performance anxiety; and Ferguson’s work incorporates pop culture icons to explore social and political issues such as racism, gay marriage and war. One of Ferguson’s paintings, “Dashboard Jesus,” is also in the current student art exhibit “Escape,” which runs through May 13 in the Kruglak Gallery.
“It is their fourth semester in my class and they were required to each produce an individual body of work in the fourteen weeks of the semester,” says instructor Leslie Nemour. “Their work is extraordinary.”
A reception for the artists will be held Monday, May 19, 4-6 p.m. in the gallery. Gallery hours: Monday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; and Tuesday/Wednesday, 10 a.m.-7:30pm. Both the exhibit and the reception are free and open to the public. Obtain a free visitor’s parking permit from the Campus Police, Building 1100 in Lot 1A. Use Lot 3B for gallery parking.
A photo of “Dashboard Jesus” is available for download on MiraCosta’s web site. For more information on the artists and the exhibit, contact Leslie Nemour at (760) 757-2121, ext. 6441 or e-mail her.
