Scare Away Hunger Campaign Underway at MiraCosta College
MiraCosta College’s Service Learning and Volunteer Center is hosting its annual Scare Away Hunger Campaign to support the MiraCosta College Student Food Pantry. The pantry was started in 2006 by a group of students and staff members who were concerned about student hunger. Since then, hundreds of students have been helped with emergency food assistance and community referrals for long term support. Please join the effort to support this worthwhile cause and help in the following ways:
• Donate canned goods (no soft packaging - it must be canned). Popular items include: soups, vegetables, fruits, and tuna. Please make sure the items are not expired.
• Donate money. These funds are used to replenish the pantry when it runs low and to purchase grocery store gift cards for the students.
• Donate grocery store gift cards. In addition to canned items, grocery store gift cards are distributed to students in $10 increments so they can purchase milk, eggs, and bread.
Food donations may be dropped off in the Halloween bins located in the following areas: on the Oceanside Campus, 1 Barnard Drive at the Service Learning Office, Student Activities Office, EOPS, Health Services, Health and Wellness Center, Tutoring Center, Child Development Center, Career and Counseling Center, and in the 4800 Building. MiraCosta College is located at 1 Barnard Drive, Oceanside.
At the San Elijo Campus, located at 3333 Manchester Avenue, Cardiff, items may be dropped off at the Student Activities Office and the staff lounge.
At MiraCosta’s Community Learning Center, located at 1831 Mission Avenue, Oceanside, items may be dropped off in the faculty lounge.
Monetary donations and gift cards may be sent directly to the MiraCosta College Foundation Office, 1 Barnard Drive, Oceanside. Please indicate that the donations are for the MCC Food Pantry.
The deadline to donate food items is November 9; gift cards and cash donations are accepted year-round. For more information on the Food Pantry or the Service Learning Program, contact Carol Wilkinson by e-mail or call (760) 795-6616.
