Christy Coobatis

Music and Recording Arts Instructor

Christy Coobatis picked up his first instrument, the guitar, when he was just seven years old.  Since then, Christy has established himself as a world class musician and composer, writing music for commercials, feature films, movies of the week and cable television programs.

Despite Christy’s love for music, he originally chose to pursue another field of study and obtained his B.A. in psychology from Wayne State University.  Christy then enrolled in a Ph.D. program only to discover that it wasn’t psychology that he wanted to practice after all; it was music!  At this point, Christy enrolled at University of California Irvine and subsequently obtained a bachelor of arts in interdisciplinary studies and a bachelor of music in guitar and composition.  Christy now holds a master of music degree in composition from Cal State Fullerton.

Christy came to MiraCosta after teaching music at a number of other California colleges.  He has found MiraCosta to be a great fit and enjoys the campus community. “I love being part of such a dynamic department,” says Christy.  “Teaching at MiraCosta is an honor and a pleasure.”

Christy teaches a variety of courses at MiraCosta.  In all of his classes, Christy shares with students his knowledge of music as well as his personal experience as a television and film composer.  He also makes sure to impart practical advice to students as well.

“I tell students to study, stay focused, and stay healthy.  If you want to create good music you have to create a good lifestyle and be healthy, happy and balanced.”
