Ryan Simons

Ryan Simons grew up in San Diego but moved to Texas after high school, where he took a job as a correctional officer at a maximum security prison.

“I enjoyed the job and got to meet a lot of good officers,” says Ryan.  “But I couldn’t see myself being a correctional officer forever.” 

After a couple of years in Texas, Ryan moved back to Oceanside where he started a career as a loss prevention manager for a retail store.  Then, an article in a local newspaper about MiraCosta’s biotechnology facility lured him to the campus, where he enrolled in the biotech program.

“I have always been interested in science since high school,” explains Ryan.  “I’ve really learned a lot from the program at MiraCosta.  I’ve learned a lot in the lab and particularly like the high tech machinery we use.”

In September 2006, Ryan switched careers again and was hired as a Quality Control Associate I by Molecular Medicine BioServices, Inc.  According to Ryan, the Carlsbad company specializes in using viruses to manufacture biopharmaceuticals.

Despite having obtained a great job, Ryan is still determined to continue his education and is working toward his associate degree. He has also decided pursue a higher degree and ultimately earn a Ph.D. 

“I am interested in researching viruses in different parts of the world,” explains Ryan.  “I also want a career rather than just a job. I want to work on something that improves lives.  I’m excited at the possibility to work for an industry that helps society.”
