MiraCosta College Hosts Latino Graduation Celebration

The MiraCosta College 16th Annual Latino Graduation Celebration is scheduled for Friday, May 11, with a reception at 6 p.m. followed by the program at 6:30 p.m. It will be held in the Student Center Dining Room at MiraCosta College, 1 Barnard Drive, Oceanside. Students earning certificates, associate degrees, as well as students from the Community Learning Center who will be earning adult high school diplomas, will be honored.  Students will have the opportunity to publicly thank their families and friends, in English or Spanish, for assisting them in achieving their educational goals.

This year will have the largest group of students to ever participate in this celebratory event, and approximately 200 family members and friends are expected to attend. Keynote speaker will be Carmen Avalos, city clerk from the city of Southgate. MiraCosta College Superintendent/President Dr. Francisco Rodriguez will welcome the students and families to the event, and Aztec dancers will bless the graduates.

This ceremony honors the resilience and perseverance of Latino students as they’ve overcome many obstacles toward the completion of a degree. This accomplishment is rooted in community, family, and school support and acknowledges the students’ support system. Generations of family members attend this ceremony, many of whom are witnessing the first college graduate in their families.
