MiraCosta College President to Serve on National Science Foundation Committee
MiraCosta College’s Superintendent/President Dr. Francisco Rodriguez has accepted a three-year term on the National Science Foundation (NSF) Education and Human Resources Advisory Committee.
Among its duties, the committee advises the NSF on effective and efficient strategies for meeting the challenges of science, math, engineering, and technology education (STEM) at all levels in the United States. They also advise on priorities for research, evaluation, and communication of outcomes in these areas.
Encouraging students to become interested in STEM careers has long been a priority at MiraCosta College. For the past five summers, the college has hosted a STEM day camp designed to bring together instructors, industry professionals and current college students from STEM fields to lead hands-on, lab-oriented class sessions for area middle schoolers, in order to demonstrate the power of these applied technologies.
Dr. Francisco Rodriguez has a Ph.D. in education from Oregon State University, a master’s degree in community development and a bachelor’s degree in Chicano studies, both from UC Davis, and was appointed superintendent/president of the MiraCosta Community College District in January 2009. The MiraCosta College district serves more than 18,000 credit and noncredit students at three campuses in North San Diego County.
