MiraCosta College ESL Instructor Receives Recognition for
Teaching Visiting Japanese Students

MiraCosta College noncredit English as a second language (ESL) instructor Debbie Hanley spent part of last summer teaching English to a group of Japanese middle school students who were visiting MiraCosta College. The students, who had survived the Japan tsunami, received lessons arranged through Mary Gross, credit ESL instructor, and the students’ Japanese school. A television crew accompanied the group of students, and Debbie and two other instructors were filmed for Japanese national television. Debbie recently received a letter from the United States Ambassador to Japan, John Roos, thanking her for her work.
