MiraCosta College Sustainability Practices Recognized

The MiraCosta Community College District has received honorable mention in the California Community Colleges Board of Governors annual Energy and Sustainability Award Program in the category, “Excellence in Energy & Sustainability – District Leadership.” The category recognizes excellence in the implementation of a district-wide sustainability advisory committee.

In January 2011, MiraCosta College established a Sustainability Advisory Committee to oversee the college’s multiple sustainable practices. This committee, comprised of students, faculty, staff, and administrators, is an integral part of developing the vision, goals and focused plan for sustainable practices for the college.

Committee accomplishments for 2012 include:
  • Recommended change from a modular to sustainable Gen 7 modular science building for the Oceanside Campus, which will be operational for fall 2013 semester.
  • Completed a district-wide energy efficiency and demand response master plan study
  • Initiated action to have all parking lot lights off at 11 p.m. at all three district sites.
  • Installation of new energy-efficient cool roofs in two buildings on the Oceanside Campus.
  • Amended storm water pollution prevention language for purchasing contracts.
  • Coordinated re-stenciling of all drainage inlets at all three campuses with storm water markings logo.
  • Joined the U.S. Green Building Council and the National Wildlife Federation.
  • Developed a job description for a sustainability coordinator.
With the combined efforts of the committee and commitment from the Board and superintendent/president, the MiraCosta Community College District will become a vanguard educational institution committed to innovation and researched best practices, broad access to higher education, and environmental sustainability.
