Program Information

The MiraCosta College Honors Scholar Program (HSP) centers on addendums zero-unit classes connected to a "parent class") that are academically enriched to stimulate students intellectually, to encourage independent and critical thinking, and to promote close interaction between students and faculty. As a member of the Honors Transfer Council of California, the MiraCosta Honors Scholar Program joins a consortium of more than 50 California community colleges that strive to negotiate special transfer agreements linking community college honors programs to specific universities, large or small, public or private.

HSP is an opportunity for students to improve their writing skills and to place their critical thinking skills at the university level.  In addition, HSP students receive priority admissions to UCLA TAP (Transfer Alliance Program) and several other schools, special counseling, and invitations to university events while enrolled at MCC.

HSP courses/addendums are chosen to fulfill MCC general education degree requirements, as well as IGETC and transfer requirements to UC, CSU and most other universities.

Honors Scholar Program Student

Established classroom standards and interaction are oftentimes simply not enough for certain types of students; thus, participation in an HSP addendum means a student is willing to find and engage in new academic challenges.  Students in HSP must maintain a 3.0 GPA in all Honors coursework plus a cumulative 3.0 GPA.

Honors Coordinators

Honors coordinators are members of the college faculty who manage the administrative details of HSP, including screening and approving future Honors addendums and Honors students; coordinating all Honors Scholar Program scheduling, promoting the special activities, as well as participating in the Honors Transfer Council of California.

Honors Faculty

Our Honors professors bring to the program dedication, scholarship, and interest in helping students achieve their goals.  They enjoy teaching, value learning, cultivate creativity, invite collaboration, and more importantly, share a devotion to helping their students become talented scholars.  It is the students’ responsibility to contact Honors instructors, via email, upon enrolling in Honors addendums.

Honors Counselor

MiraCosta has a designated Honors counselor to assist HSP students with developing an Educational Plan to guide them through their community college education and to select all of the necessary course work to facilitate transfer to a university.  HSP students are required to meet with the Honors counselor once per semester. Students can make an appointment to meet with the Honors counselor in the University Transfer Center (760) 795-6880.

HSP Listserv

Upon admittance to the Honors Scholar Program, students are automatically subscribed to the Honors Listserv.  The Honors listserv is a network of honors students and staff connected by email through a server.  Often, pertinent information regarding transfer updates or scholarship opportunities is posted on the listserv.  Please see the Honors Handbook Appendix for general guidelines or protocol in using a listserv.
