Residency Waiver

Petition to Waive Final 30 unit Residency Requirement

Requirements for Honors Scholar Program certification state that to be Honors Certified, a student must complete honors program requirements which include satisfying the Honors residency: the final 30 transferable units must be completed at MiraCosta College.

If you are approaching readiness for transfer and, for extenuating circumstances, are:

  • Unable to complete one or two of your courses at MiraCosta College and
  • Must complete coursework at another community college and
  • Will not meet final 30 units honors residency requirement

You may be eligible to waive the HSP residency requirement. You must describe the extenuating circumstances in the space provided on the petition on the back of this page. Typical situations which constitute reasons for taking coursework at another community college are: unavailable or cancelled courses, military service, and unexpected hardships, such as family or employment problems, experienced in the final two semesters (or final 30 units) before transfer.

Approval to waive the final 30-unit residency requirement for the Honors Scholar Program is subject to all of the following:

  • Must be for a purpose, which contributes to the student’s educational objective.
  • Must be approved by the Honors Counselor and the Director of Transfer Center and Articulation Programs.
  • Student must not be on Honors academic probation (below 3.0 GPA).
  • The Residency Waiver form must be submitted to the Honors Counselor for approval prior to deadline to petition for the University Studies AA degree/graduation (please check class schedule for dates).
  • Unofficial copies of transcripts from other colleges and/or proof of enrollment at other colleges must be attached with petition.
  • Upon completion of coursework, official transcripts from other colleges attended must be sent to MiraCosta’s Office of Admissions and Records.
