Transfer Tips

IGETC Certification

You should periodically check the IGETC requirements to be sure that you are completing all the requirements. Students who transfer without completing IGETC should be aware they will be required to complete the general education pattern of the transfer school. This might result in taking 3-4 additional general education classes at the four-year university to graduate. Therefore, check your IGETC coursework carefully. Common mistakes include missing a lab class, taking the wrong critical thinking course at another college, and not taking enough high school or college language classes. It is particularly important to have transcripts from other colleges evaluated.

Be sure to request IGETC certification at the Admissions Office during the final month of your final semester at MiraCosta College.

University Studies AA Degree Petitions

Students who are eligible can file for the MiraCosta College University Studies AA degree. Requirements include completing 60 units (all major preparation + IGETC or GE Breadth for the transfer school). All Honors students must petition for an AA degree to receive “Certified Honors Scholar” designation.

The filing periods for the AA degree are during the first six weeks of the final semester in attendance. Students must meet with a counselor to develop an educational plan for transfer, obtain the appropriate paperwork and then file the petition with the Admissions Office.

AP Information

Students with AP scores need to be sure to have the official score reports on file in the Admissions Office at MiraCosta College and with the Honors Scholar Program. The Honors program will accept a copy of the scores, but Admissions needs an official copy. To order AP results, you may contact the College Board at 1-888-225-5427 or e-mail apexams@info.collegeboard.org. AP transcripts typically cost $12.
