UCLA Transfer Information
At a recent meeting at UCLA, Admissions representatives reviewed several important transfer-related pointers for students interested in transferring to UCLA. They are:
- Students must not wait to complete the transferable Math and English 100 and critical thinking courses until the final spring or summer prior to transfer. These are important admissions requirements that should be completed or in progress at the time of application.
- Economics, Business Economics, and all the Biological Science majors continue to be extremely competitive. The Admissions Office considers how many prep courses have been completed, the cumulative transferable GPA, and the GPA in the major prep. A student should aim for the highest possible GPA. A student with a 3.0-3.2 GPA will not be considered competitive and probably will not be admitted, even with Honors / TAP certification. Also, the prep for these majors should be completed or mostly completed at the time of application.
- All students should try to plan a second-choice major by completing preparation in that major. That plan should include taking at least 2, maybe 3, courses in the second-choice major. An English major must include at least one literature course. This is particularly important for Film majors and Communications majors since the TAP does not apply to these majors.
- The Honors/TAP certification is only valid for majors in the UCLA College [formerly College of Letters and Science (except for Communication Studies)]. It does not apply for Film and Theater majors and majors in the Schools of Art, Nursing, Engineering, and Computer Science.
- UCLA has a variety of rules regarding Advanced Placement (AP) test scores and how they are used in transferring. Be sure to meet with a counselor if you received a score of 3 or better on an AP exam.
- All coursework at previous colleges must be considered in the admissions process. A total college GPA must be used for admissions consideration. In some cases, repeating a course with a poor grade will result in raising your GPA since UCLA will drop the first grade, particularly if both courses are taken at a community college and the courses are identical.
Additional Scholors / Transfer Notes
- Being Honors/TAP certified could make the difference between being admitted and not being admitted to UCLA, particularly if your GPA is between 3.0-3.5.
- 60 units are the minimum number of units required for transfer to the University of California. These units must be completed by the end of the Spring semester prior to transferring for most students.
- Although IGETC is not an admissions requirement, completion of IGETC prior to transfer will result in more favorable admission consideration.
- “Undecided” students will not be considered for transfer admission. Students must select a major and complete the prep for that major.
- Students may not transfer as sophomores to the University of California. Generally, the only schools that admit at the sophomore level are private institutions.
- Pre-Med, Pre-Pharmacy, Pre-Dental, and Pre-Law are not transfer majors. They are plans for a course of study leading to professional schools. These students must select a major and complete the preparation courses for that major in order to receive a B.A. or B.S. degree.
