International Student Insurance and Safety Information

Student Accident and Sickness Insurance (August 1, 2010-July 31, 2011)

  • Provider: International students must purchase the health insurance provided by Student Insurance, Inc. which can be obtained through MiraCosta College.
  • Cost for mandatory basic coverage of $200,000 per incident: The health insurance fee for international students at MiraCosta College is $477 for six months.   Students must pay this fee at the time of registration for each Spring and Fall semester. When you pay for classes in Fall semester, your insurance coverage dates are August 1 through February 1.  When you pay for classes in spring semester, your insurance coverage dates are February 1-July 31. If you believe that you have health insurance equivalent to the one that is provided through Student Insurance, Inc. you must complete a health insurance waiver form (available at IIP) each semester and have that coverage approved by our office prior to your registration
  • Cost for dependent insurance: If you want to enroll your wife or husband or children, you must complete a Registration Form for dependents and pay for each dependent separately.   The cost to cover your spouse is $1,320 for 6 months.  The cost of enrolling a one child is $456 for 6 months.  The cost for dependent children (3 or more) is $1,290 for 6 months.
  • NEW OPTIONAL Catastrophic coverage: The insurance program added an OPTIONAL Catastrophic coverage that extends coverage to $500,000.00 per accident or illness.  The optional Catastrophic Coverage costs $608 for one year (August 1, 2010 – July 31, 2011).   Students can purchase the optional coverage for themselves and their dependents.  International student can purchase the Optional extended coverage, but must make the purchase before school starts.  You can print the Optional Catastrophic enrollment form from our website or complete the form in our office.   If you want to purchase the optional Catastrophic coverage you must complete the special enrollment form NO LATER THAN August 23, 2010. 
  • To see a doctor: International students who want to see a doctor, should contact the Health Services Offices (available at both Oceanside and San Elijo campus). If the Health Services Office is closed, you should contact a health clinic listed on the Health Insurance flyer
  • To see a doctor is $25.00 and $100.00 for emergency room. However, if you visit Health Services and they refer you to a doctor, you do NOT need to pay the $20 copay!  Whether you need to pay additional fees for your doctor's visit depends on which clinic and which doctor you see.  Please contact the Student Insurance Agency by calling (800) 367-5830 or visit the website and click on  “FIND A DOCTOR”.
  • To obtain a copy of the International Student Accident & sickness Health Insurance Brochure written in your language, you can go to Student Insurance's website. On left side of website, click on International Plans. Click on California and

    Select Miracosta College from the dropdown menu. 

  • To request prescription reimbursement: Please use the claim form via Medco Phamacy.
