Electronic Course Reserves
Reserve Room and Electronic Reserve Services
During a semester, many instructors will set aside books, periodical articles, quizzes, or other material for students in particular classes to use. These items are located in open Reserve Rooms at both campuses. Most reserve items are for use within the library for limited time periods; this allows for a small number of resources to be used by a large number of students.
Many items are also available electronically, through our electronic Reserve Desk. Access to electronic reserves is limited to current MiraCosta students, faculty, and staff. Users are prompted to enter their SURF id and password to access electronic reserves.
Many electronic reserve materials are in PDF, and require that the computer you are using has Adobe Acrobat Reader installed for proper viewing. Electronic reserves may also be articles located in research databases to which MiraCosta subscribes. Access to these databases is available on campus (without a password) and from locations off campus using your individual SURF ID and Password to log-in.
To locate reserve items for your classes, go into the online catalog Reserve Desk.
- Enter the Course number (for example, BIO101) and click on Course Number, OR
- Enter the instructor's last name and click on Instructor, OR
- Enter the complete course name (for example, Human Biology), and click on Course Name.
- Find the item you want to view.
- The Location will be listed for the item you choose (for example, "RESV-OCN desk: Available: for: 2HOUR checkout").
- Request "CLOSED RESERVE" items at the Circulation/Check-out Desk.
- All Electronic Reserve items have a location of INTERNET and the command CLICK Web Link TO ACCESS.
- Click on Web Link from the result preview, or click on the DETAILS icon next to the title, such as "Bio 101 Readings," then click on WEB LINK, next to A Look Inside.
- This page informs users about copyright law and protections on these materials, and contains instructions and help for logging-in to view electronic reserves.
- After log-in, users can view the materials placed on electronic reserve by their instructors.
