California’s new Poet Laureate

An educator and a man with a passion for the arts, Young began publishing poems, stories and articles in his early teens. He has taught poetry and fiction at universities nationwide, and his works have appeared in publications including the New York Times, Chicago Review, Seattle Review, Rolling Stone, and the Norton Anthology of African-American Literature. His prose has been translated into many languages, and he frequently travels internationally, reading, lecturing and performing with musicians. Young has also worked as a screenwriter, collaborating with such stars as Sidney Poitier, Bill Cosby and Richard Pryor. He has received numerous awards including the Wallace Stegner, Guggenheim, Fulbright, National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, PEN-USA Award for Non-Fiction, the Pushcart Prize, two American Book awards, and book of the year honors from the New York Times. Young often talks about being in the moment. March 3 is the moment to join this great storyteller at MiraCosta College for a memorable evening of poetry and prose!

Silent Film Fest in February!
MiraCosta College is pleased to present Philip Carli, who brings both prodigious musical talent and a committed scholarly outlook to his lifelong passion for the music and culture of the turn of the last century. Dr. Carli has composed more than 50 scores for films and has performed around the world but he’s no stranger to North County, having grown up in Carlsbad.
Dr. Carli has performed at MiraCosta in years past and we’re thrilled to bring him back for two performances you’re sure to enjoy. He will precede the screening of each film with a brief lecture highlighting the history, pertinent facts and anecdotes about each film.
Suggested donation at the door is $5; $1 for students.

Kate Phillips, author of Helen Hunt Jackson: A Literary Life, and film producer Nancy Wilkman present their work on Helen Hunt Jackson, dedicated activist in the cause of Native American rights and author of the historical novel, Ramona. Kate Phillips is the author of White Rabbit (1996) and the 2003 biography of Helen Hunt Jackson. Nancy Wilkman has produced numerous documentaries for PBS, HBO, A&E, and the History Channel. Her video “Ramona: A Story of Passion & Protest,” honored with a best-writing Emmy nomination, will be shown.

The Passion of Artemesia
Susan Vreeland Susan Vreeland, author of the New York Times bestseller The Girl in Hyacinth Blue (1999) and upcoming The Forest Lover (2004 publication), will speak on her second, also best-selling novel, The Passion of Artemesia (2002), the story of baroque artist, Artemesia Gentileschi. Surviving rape, papal interrogation and torture, public humiliation, and oppressive sexual politics, Gentileschi was finally recognized as the foremost woman artist in her own time, only to be overlooked for the next three hundred years. Ms. Vreeland will show slides of the artist's work as she describes her research and writing about this remarkable 17th century painter.
