Membership Information

Who can be a member?

Phi Theta Kappa is an elite honors society; consequently, a competitive GPA is required.  After no less than 12 units completed, the students overall GPA must be 3.5.  Those who meet the standards are normally mailed requests to join, but if a student knows he or she qualifies and did not receive a letter they can request an application through the Student Services office (where we get our I.D. cards).  After completing the application, membership fees have to be satisfied; they amount to $75.  Finally, the student who completes these tasks is officially a member in PTK.

Provisional membership is also available.  Students can be a part of the Alpha Chi Lambda chapter by paying a $10 membership fee.  Provisional members are not recognized by the international organization; rather, they are solely a part of the chapter.  This is great for students who almost meet the requirements and want to start getting involved early (once full membership is obtained, the remaining balance for international and regional dues has to be paid), and for students who cannot meet the requirements but still want to be affiliated with an honors society.  Membership looks terrific on resumes and college applications.

How to get involved?

Members can get involved by attending meetings, joining the listserve, and communicating with officers.  This website will also be a key to finding ways to become more active.  Committees will be continually formed to address different issues (members are encouraged to participate in such committees), volunteer functions are always being planned by the executive board, and events on campus are fun to attend and organize.  We hope to see as many members as possible step up this year and get the most out of their time at MiraCosta College.
