Students are given the option to complete 10 hours (15 for the certificate) with an organization that provides services to children and their families. As the class explores issues that impact all aspects of children it will be helpful for students to have a better understanding of how organizations meet the eclectic needs of children and their families. Students will be asked to assist the community organization with any programming that is geared toward children and their families. After a two hour block of time, students are required to write about a small moment that happened at the site, first describing the moment and then reflecting on it. Students will submit 5 small moment papers to receive credit. If students do 15 hours of service, only 4 small moment papers are required.
Students who choose the service learning option will gain a fuller understanding of how community organizations provide a valuable service to children and their families. Secondly they will gain a better understanding of the needs of community organizations to be able to provide services to children and their families.
