Title of Course: Introduction to Sociology
Service Learning Assignment:
Students have the option of engaging in 12 hours of community service and writing a brief reflection paper on that service. Students who attend the Saturday morning class also have the opportunity to participate in the annual SUN Project on September 26th.
Learning Objectives for the Service Learning Assignment:
Students who successfully complete their service learning project will have displayed an ability to cooperate effectively with others in or outside of the classroom. In addition, based on their own observations and experiences a number of other course objectives are often addressed including, but not limited to, the following:
- Differentiate between the sociological perspective and other social scientific or behavioral perspectives and demonstrate an ability to apply the sociological imagination to specific social issues.
- Explain and analyze society in terms of social structure, social institutions, and social processes, and demonstrate an ability to interpret how a specific social concept is understood from a sociological perspective.
- Identify, define, and explain basic sociological concepts and theories, and demonstrate an ability to distinguish different major sociological theoretical perspectives which explain social behavior.
- Compare and contrast multiple social and cultural perspectives.
- Apply concepts, theories, and research methods to specific issues, conditions, and behaviors in society.
