Title of Course: Child Growth and Development

Service Assignment:

The service learning assignment is an opportunity for students to gain practical experience for the information learned in class regarding the overall development of children.  Students will complete 10 out-of-class service hours working in an approved service learning location. The assignment is optional. Students will need to submit two sets of field notes and a final reflection paper.

Learning Objectives for Service Assignment:

For students to observe the following course objectives in action and not just read about them in the textbook:

  • To define human development focusing on the interaction of the physical, cognitive, and social/emotional domains.
  • To explore possible sources of developmental changes and reasons for disturbances in the developmental process, including an examination of the interaction of both heredity and environment in human development.
  • To examine and explain different theories of human development and investigate how diverse theoretical perspectives effect both research and application. 
  • To understand the chronology of events which occur throughout the various stages of human growth and development between conception and six years of age.
