Linda Shaffer    Health 101

Title of Course: Principals of Health

Service Learning Assignment:
This is an extra credit assignment worth 75 points.

Community involvement is a powerful way to see the concepts of health and wellness in action.  In this project you will volunteer 10 hours at a community agency (i.e. Ivey Ranch, Fraternity House, Brother Benno's, Women's Resource Center, and MiraCosta Campus) that is related to health and wellness.  During your agency experience you will be concentrating on how this activity relates to the concepts of self esteem; stress and psychological health; communication, and/or challenges related to relationships and violence.

For local students: the Service Learning Office is located on the Oceanside campus in room 3306 (right next to Admissions and Records). Staff members can provide the required paperwork, assist students with selecting an organization and explain agency requirements. The office number is 3306 and the phone number is 706-795-6616.  It is your responsibility to call the agency and arrange your placement.  Dress appropriately.  As a rule, shorts, tank tops, flip flops, belly shirts, and other casual wear are not appropriate.  Ask if there is a dress code and adhere to it.  Confidentiality is required.  You may discuss your experience with others but do not use the names of those involved.  Everyone has a right to privacy.  Use this experience as a resume builder.

If the organization you select requires a TB test, the testing can be done at the MiraCosta College Health Services, phone number 760-757-6675.

For students who are out of county: If you are an off campus student outside of San Diego County, please contact service learning program director, Carol Wilkinson at (760) 795-6618 or cwilkinson@miracosta.edu
