Title of Course: Child and Adolescent Growth and Development

Service Learning Assignment:

Ten hours of community service working directly with children or adolescents.  Students are required to write field notes that connect the service experience to the text and write a reflection paper looking back at the overall service learning experience.

Learning Objectives for the Service Assignment:

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to demonstrate competencies in two broad areas: critical thinking and problem solving.  In addition, students will be able to:

  • analyze major developmental milestones for children from conception through adolescence in the areas of physical, psychosocial, cognitive, and language development.

  • compare and contrast various theoretical frameworks that relate to the study of human development.

  • analyze the multiple influences (social, economic, political, historical and cultural contexts) that affect children's development.

Interview students about books they have read. *1hr/wk required Mon., Tues., Thurs., Fri. 8:00-3:00 & Wed.8:00-12:30.
