Title of Couse: Gender Studies in Communication
Why Service Learning?
1) It’s vital that you observe female/male, female/female, and male/male communications in a natural setting. To do this well, it’s best if it is not a setting you already inhabit. As you’ll discover during this course, much of our communication is embedded in expected gender roles, therefore, stepping out of our everyday environments will help us see such communication more clearly so that we can analyze the communication as communication rather than having a personal stake in outcomes of conversations.
2) Service Learning is an active way to engage in learning about communication. Too often, we sit back and read our textbooks, often falling asleep in the process. We don’t get involved with the subject matter. We take it in via words on a page or lecture delivered in class. Communication is all around us. Our world works, or doesn’t, as well as our communication flows. This project allows you to see gendered communication in everyday life—someone else’s. You’ll have the objective distance to judge why some communication patterns, particularly gendered ones, work better in certain situations than others.
3) The ability to reflect on our own lives is crucial to putting into practice what we learn about communication. Service learning provides an optimal opportunity for reflection. It allows you to first apply the theories and concepts to other’s communications and then it invites you to consider how those communications are similar or dissimilar from your own.
4) Reflection provides opportunity for change. The dynamic of observing, recording, and reflecting will create a situation where you can decide to change your own communication style if you want to. It will not require, but it might encourage, alterations in your future communications.
5) And while you’re observing and learning and maybe even changing, you’ll also be providing service in the community—something to be proud of.
For this class, I ask that you perform 10 hours of service learning as part of your study of gendered communication. All of these service learning opportunities are rich with communication between varied ages and genders which will allow you to apply the knowledge you’re gaining in this class. There are many service learning options provided by MiraCosta beyond those listed below including many schools in the county. If nothing on this list appeals to you, please ask me about options. Also, an alternative assignment is available if this service would create a hardship for you to perform.
