Title of Course: Contemporary Social Problems

Service Learning Assignment:

Students should spend 15 hours during the semester working with one social program.   Students are to submit 7 personal reflections of their experiences working with the organization that include comments on organizational structure, mode of advocacy, target population and apply the appropriate concepts and theories from the material discussed in class.  The student should also prepare brief presenation and 3-4 page formal paper.

Learning Objectives for the Service Assignment:
Students will apply the knowledge they have gained in class to the various social programs aimed toward ameliorating a particular social problem.

This organization provides food and dignity to impoverished senios living in North County. Help is needed with packing boxes, sorting food, office help, special events. Monday-Friday 9:00-5:00.  The second Tuesday of every month 6:00 PM-7:30 PM.

This organization provides services to those living in poverty and the homeless. Sort clothing and toys, help with distribution of clothing, assist with preparation of food packets, Monday-Friday 6:00am-1:00pm.  Saturday 8:00am-1:00pm.

Casa de Amistad
Solana Beach

This organization is dedicated to nurturing the educational and character development of Hispanic and Latino children and their families. Volunteers at Casa de Amistad have the opportunity to work with Hispanic and Latino students in grades K-12.  Volunteers act as a mentor and help with homework, reading and being a positive role model.  Tutors are needed: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:15-5:45 and 6:00-7:30. Fingerprinting is required. Casa de Amparo
Oceanside

This organization provides shelter and support services to children who have been removed from their homes due to child abuse and neglect. Assistance is needed at the Child Development Center (ages 1-5) working with the children and helping staff. At the Children's Shelter (ages 6-17) help is needed in the classrooms and with the evening and weekend activities  *TB test, background check, interview, reference check is required.  The fee for fingerprinting is $91.00 (volunteers may be reimbursed after 6 months).  Minimum of eight hours per month is required as well as a 6 month commitment.

Center for Community Solutions

Escondido

This organization is committed to healing and preventing sexual assault and relationship violence.  Volunteer needs include: clothes closet coordinator, children's activity leaders, residential counselor and office assistant.  Some specialized positions require a 62 hour training.  If volunteering over 10 hours, fingerprinting and background check is required.  Monday-Friday 9:00am-5:00pm, Saturday by appt.  Minimum of ten hours required.

This organization advocates for and provides low income housing developments and support services. Help at the Learning Centers with after school programs: reading, writing, computers (adults & children) , arts and crafts. Hours are generally Mon.-Fri. 2:00-6:00. *Fingerprinting required but will be refunded to those without criminal record.

Social service organization- provides wide range of services.  Assistance is needed with food pantry, English-Spanish translation, receptionist, youth mentors and tutors, clerical, and social services related activities.  Mon-Fri. 8:30-5:00.  Potential volunteers must set up an interview with volunteer coordinator and undergo fingerprinting at least 2 weeks prior to beginning.  A minimum of 20 hours is required.

Vista

Social Service Organization.  Help with clerical support intake/assessment (counseling programs), after school programs special projects (photography, beginning tech support, web graphics, marketing, etc.) Mediation/ fair housing clerks, translation (Spanish/English), reception for tax/prep support.  Lifeline requests a minimum 50 hour commitment from students.  In some cases, clearances will need to be completed prior to volunteering. TB test, drug screen and fingerprinting are required for most volunteer positions.  Clearances are paid for by Lifeline at no cost to the volunteer. Monday-Friday 9:00-7:00pm and occasional Saturdays.

This 9th-12th grade school is a boarding school for foster children.  Volunteers are needed to provide tutoring to this sensitive population in the area of Math, English, History, and Spanish.  Hours are flexible: Monday-Thursday 3:15-5:00 p.m. & 6:15-7:45 p.m.  Live Scan fingerprinting is required and paid for by the school.

Vista Community Clinic

The Vista Community Clinic is seeking volunteers to help promote and educate clients about the benefits of early literacy for their children.  Clinic providers and volunteers help promote and practice early literacy by reading to children while they are in the clinics' waiting area and by encouraging parents to read to their children.  Volunteer opportunities are at various locations. Assistance is also needed with parenting or health education classes and program events. TB test, volunteer application and program orientation required.
