Volunteer Opportunities ~September 2010
Disabled Student Services-On Campus Volunteer Opportunity (Oceanside MiraCosta College) is looking for either one or two volunteers to help a student in either one or both of the following classes: SPEC 840 Mathematics, Tuesday & Thursday 11:00-12:15 and SPEC 850 English, on Tuesdays & Thursdays 9:30-10:45 (both classes are at the Oceanside Campus, room 3005). Volunteer must be extremely dependable, because the DSPS Student will depend on them to assist him in class. The in-class aide will sit with the student in class and assist him by: getting books out of his book bag or back pack; writing notes from lecture for him; gathering and turning in handouts and assignments, assistance as needed in our computer lab for writing assignments during class. Nothing will be required of a personal nature – no restroom assistance, transportation – nothing like that, just assistance in the class. Saturday, September 11, 10:00-2:00: The San Diego Archaeological Center will host their Preview Project Archaeology Day and needs volunteers to serve in two-hour shifts to help lead lessons and hands-on activities in an informal setting. Saturday, September 11, 8:00-8:00: Ivey Ranch Park Association, Annual Western Hoedown needs volunteers to help with this annual fundraising event. Volunteers help with pre-event set up and post-event clean up, assist with youth in the Kids Corral, serving food to VIP guests, directing traffic and staffing the Silent Auction and Raffle tables. Wednesday, September 15, 9:00-11:00: Angel’s Depot, an organization that helps to provide food for the senior citizen community, needs one volunteer to help once a month during distribution day. Volunteer will help monitor the boxes so nobody takes more than they should and help to carry food boxes out to the recipients’ cars if needed. First day is Wednesday, September 15 and other dates are Wednesdays, October 13, November 10, and December 15, from 9:00-11:00 a.m. The pickup site is at the Vista Senior Center, 1400 Vale Terrace Drive, Vista, CA 92084. September 23, 12:00-1:30: MiraCosta Service Learning & Volunteer Center will host the Volunteer & Community Resource Fair at the Oceanside Campus, during College Hour in the clock tower area. Every year we have between 30-40 non-profit organization sharing volunteer opportunities, resources, and job openings. This is a great way to get ready to make a difference in your community. September 25, 9:00-12:00: City of Oceanside will celebrate the 26th Anniversary of California Coastal Cleanup Day by participating in the tenth annual Buena Vista Creek Cleanup and Oceanside Beach Cleanup. Volunteers will receive cleanup supplies, refreshments, community service hours, and a free give-away item. Call the Clean Water Program Event Information Line for more details at (760) 435-5536.
