Community HousingWorks Adopt a Family Holiday Program--Due to our current economic situation 2008 has become a challenging year for many families, especially those that were already low-income.  For more information on how to adopt a family in need contact Heather Laird at (760) 432-6878 ext. 5457 or email halird@chworks.org.

Everyone a Reader Program at Ocean Knoll Elementary in Encinitas is recruiting 4 dedicated volunteers who are willing to listen to 1st through 3rd grade students not reading at grade level who read from pre-selected books.  It’s a simple but beneficial program.  The commitment would be one hour a week during the school year and training is available but not required.  Contact Jeanne Jones at (760) 634-8477 or email jjones@wfmkt.com.

The Carlsbad Libraries have an immediate need for story tellers.  If you love to read in character, use props, tell creative stories and love to work with children of preschool and elementary age then this is the project for you.  All volunteers must complete an application and have a background and fingerprint check.  Once approved, applicants are asked to commit to one Saturday morning per month 10:00 or 10:30 depending on the library location.  Contact Amy Bennet at (760) 436-2877 or email abenn@ci.carlsbad.ca.us.

The Museum of Making Music is recruiting volunteers to assist with children’s tours.  Children receive a tour of the museum, learn about the history of instruments, and then create an instrument of their own.  Tour dates are:  December 4, 5, 11, 12, 16, 17, and 18.  For a complete list of times and dates and to volunteer, contact Crystal Babowal at (760) 438-5996 ext. 219 or email crystalb@museumofmakingmusic.org.

Saturday, December 6, 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. - A local Army Reserve Family Readiness Group needs volunteers to help entertain the children of our soldiers while their parents are in training and learning about their benefits. This is a great opportunity to work with military children whose ages range from 1 to 13 years old. The event is taking place on Camp Pendleton in Oceanside at the Army Reserve Center.  If you are interested, please contact Kim Flores at 818.518.7834 or email kimberly.flores3@us.army.mil.

Saturday, December 6, 12:00-3:00—Teri Inc. seeks volunteers to help with a fundraising event: the Cuvee delle Vite. Proceeds support TERI’s state of the art Center for Research and Life Planning.  The Center for Research & Life Planning will be the nation’s first education and training site dedicated to studying quality of life for individuals with autism and other developmental & learning disabilities.  Volunteers can serve in different areas such as wait staff, bartenders, busboys, servers, valet and lot attendants, set-up and tear down crew.  For more information or to sign up contact Gail Holmes at 760-721-1706 ext. 122 or email gailh@terriinc.org.

Saturday, December 6, 4:00-8:30—Volunteers are needed to assist the City of Carlsbad during the Leo Carillo Ranch Holiday Lights Celebration.  Come and get in the holiday mood as the ranch is turned into a winter wonderland and assist with holiday crafts, soup station, and face painting.  Contact Natalie at (760) 602-7511 or email naleg@ci.carlsbad.ca.us.

December 9-22, 4:00-8:00 (weekday evenings only)—Do you love the Holidays and love to wrap gifts?  Come help Casa de Amparo with their annual Holiday Storefront.  Volunteers are needed to receive, sort, and wrap the gift items that are dropped off by the community for the kids at the shelter.  Contact Rayni Risher at (760) 754-5500 ext. 17 or email rrisher@casadeamparo.org.

Saturday, December 13, 7:00 a.m.-6:30 p.m.—The Special Olympics Floor Hockey needs about 115 volunteers to help during this event that takes place at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Saturday, December 13, 6:00-10:00--Volunteers are needed for the Angel's Depot Winter Gala, "The Greatest Generation's Holiday Affair".  This event the necessities to provide a food box to local seniors living in poverty.  Help is needed in the areas of set-up, silent & live auction, event logistics and a cleanup crew the next morning.  All volunteers must be over 21. Saturday, December 13, 9:00-2:00—Women’s Resource Center is seeking help for their annual Spirit of Giving.  This event is for all clients/families at the shelter and the transition house.  Volunteers assist ith crafts, childcare, food, Santa and gift wrapping.  Contact Tanya Caraballo at (760) 757-3500 ext. 122 or email vdmwrc@sbcglobal.net.  Various shifts are available.

Saturday, December 13, 10:00-2:00—The San Diego Archaeological Center will host a Children’s Holiday Workshop.  Volunteers are needed to help guide children participate with hands-on lessons on pottery, cordage making and Victorian era activities.  These events provide children with critical thinking skills while using their imagination and creativity.  Contact Annemarie Cox at (760) 291-0370 or email acox@sandiegoarchaelogy.org.

Saturday, December 13, 10:00-12:00--Navidad en el Barrio at MAAC Project Head Start Oceanside II comes every year and help is needed to unload, pack, and distribute food baskets to help families during the holidays.  Contact Pam Peyton at (760) 941-7616.

                                                                         

Sunday, December 14, 10:00-4:00—The City of Oceanside will host an all day Holiday Home Tour and volunteers are needed to help with set-up, direct the public to the locations, and serve refreshments.  Contact Esther McCord at (760) 757-2747 or esther.mccord@cox.net.

Thursday, December 18, 6:00-9:00--Community HousingWorks will host a community holiday party for their residents at Park View Terrace Apartment on 13001 Bowron Rd., Poway, CA 92064.  Volunteers are needed to set up and help during the party.  Contact Heather Laird at (760) 432-6878 ext. 5457 or email hlaird@chworks.org.

Friday, December 19, 6:00-9:30--Community HousingWorks will host a community holiday party for their residents at La Costa Paloma Apartments at 1953 Dove Ln., Carlsbad, CA 92009.  Volunteers are needed to set up at 4:00 and to help during the party.  Contact Heather Laird at (760) 432-6878 ext. 5457 or email hlaird@chworks.org.

Friday, December 19, 9:30-2:30--North County Adult Day Care Center will host a Christmas Party for the seniors.  Three volunteers are needed to help santa pass out gifts and to help pass out punch and cookies.  Contact Rick Gilbert at (760) 758-2210.

Senior Mentors for the Child Development Center:  Casa de Amparo is starting a new mentoring program and is looking for adults to mentor children in social-emotional development.  A 7-10 hours per week commitment is required and must be age 50+; stipend provided.  Contact rrisher@casadeamparo.org or (760) 754-5500 ext. 17.

Mentors for New Directions: Casa de Amparo is starting a new mentoring program.  Adults ages 28+ are needed to mentor young adults in transitional housing.  Must be willing to make a 2-year commitment & 3-4
hours per week; stipend provided.  Contact rrisher@casadeamparo.org or (760) 754-5500 ext. 17.

Saturday, January 31, 10:00-12:30--Casa de Amparo Volunteer Orientation . Join us for a morning of learning more about interacting with abused and neglected children. We will have clinical guest speakers, a time for questions & answers, refreshments will be served. Contact rrisher@casadeamparo.org or (760) 754-5500 ext. 17.
