How does service learning work?
Each semester, certain courses offer a service learning component. The guidelines for the service project are determined by the course instructor. The instructor determines the number of hours, the length of service, and the types of placements. In general, students who participate in service learning:
- Provide service to a non-profit organization or public school;
- Reflect on their personal and practical experiences by keeping a journal or field notes;
- Complete a service learning project. This might be a descriptive paper or oral presentation.
What types of service opportunities are available?
There are numerous service opportunities available. Students are encouraged to visit the Service Learning Office to review agency listings. These include: educational programs, conservation programs, senior services, health care, and social service organizations.
What are the benefits of service learning?
Through service learning students can:
- Discover connections between classroom learning and community needs
- Explore or confirm possible career choices
- Earn documented work experience
- Improve chances for transfer to a four-year college
- Apply classroom knowledge to everyday situations, using skills to resolve real problems.
