02/23/08 Spartans Beat Mesa College at the Buzzer
In another come from behind win, MiraCosta (8-8) beat Mesa with a lob play to 6-9 freshman Lin Chang. With 1.5 seconds on the clock and the score 70-70, Brad Coonradt made a great pass to Chang who finished the layup with no time left on the clock.
The Spartans were led in scoring by Lin Chang (20 points), Desmond Jones (18 points), Thomas Kearns (15 points) and Micah Youngdale (14 points). Brad Coonradt added 6 assists including the game winner.
02/19/08 Jones Leads Spartans in Comeback Win
After being down fifteen points, the MiraCosta Men's Basketball team showed what they were made of. Led by Desmond Jones (31 points, 7-11 from the 3 -pt line and 8-8 Free throws) the Spartans (7-8) defeated the 2nd place Grossmont College team. Matt Shoup had 20 points and Thomas Kearns contributed 17 points.
The Spartans also received contributions from Micah Youngdale, Brad Coonradt and Kyle Moore. MiraCosta will play it's last game of the year on Saturday February 23rd at 5:00 at home vs. Mesa College.
02/07/08 Cuyamaca College Too Much for Spartans
After being tied at 39 at halftime the Spartans' poor defensive effort led to a loss at the end of the night. Spartan guard, Desmond Jones, went down with an ankle injury after hitting his first two shots and did not return to the game. The Spartans were led in scoring by Lin Chang who finished with 29 points.
MiraCosta's next game is Saturday at home at 5:00pm vs San Diego City College.
2/04/08 Spartans Drop 2 in a Row
After a big win against Rival Palomar College, the MiraCosta Men's Basketball team dropped two close games to Miramar College and Imperial Valley College. The Spartans dropped a close one to IVC losing by 1 after an inspired comeback in the last four minutes. The Spartans closed the gap from 14 points to 2 points only to run out of time in their efforts. IVC is the first place team in the Pacific Coast Conference. The Spartans were led in scoring by Lin Chang with 18 points.
1/28/08 MiraCosta Beats Rival Palomar College
In the biggest game of the year, the Spartans showed up. Not only did the team show up, the college and the community showed up as well to offer support on MiraCosta's "Spirit Night." In front of a packed house, nearly 700 fans, the MiraCosta Spartans (5-4, 2nd place) played inspired basketball in an 85-76 win. The Spartans had a balanced attack in scoring led by Desmond Jones (20 points), Matt Shoup (20 points), Lin Chang (18 points) and Thomas Kearns (17 points).
1/14/08 Southwestern College Outlasts the Spartans
In a low scoring competition the Southwestern Jaguars (1-4) defeated the Spartans (3-3) 54-48. Although MiraCosta had it's chances to take control of the gaem, turnovers and giving up second shots ended up taking their toll. The Spartans were led in scoring by Lin Chang with 16 points. MiraCosta is in action next on Wednesday at home versus Grossmont College at 7:00pm.
1/11/08 Spartans Win Two in a Row
The MiraCosta Men's basketball team takes their record to 3-2 in league with wins at San Diego City College and against Cuyamaca College at home. The Spartans were led in scoring both games by Mike Brown (18 points and 10 points).
1/03/08 MiraCosta Drop a Close Game to Imperial Valley College
After leading for most of the game, the Spartans couldn't hold on for the victory. MiraCosta was up eleven at halftime and maintained the lead most of the second half. The final score was 75-70.
The Spartans were led by Mike Brown (18 pts), Thomas Kearns (12pts), and Cameron Flechsenhaar (10 pts).
MiraCosta (1-2 in league) is next in action Saturday 1/5/08 at home vs Cuyamaca College at 7:00pm.
12/20/07 Spartans Beat League Rival Miramar College
With the best team effort of the year, the MiraCosta Men's Basketball team beat a league rival Miramar College team that was coming off of four consecutive wins and five of their last six. The Spartans (3-11, 1-1) welcomed Matt Shoup back to the line up (returning from a broken hand) and celebrated with a 99-90 win. The Spartans had five players score in double figures. Lin Chang scored 33 points had 11 rebounds and 3 blocks. Desmond Jones provided a huge lift off the bench scoring 17 points on 6-6 field goals (5-5 from the 3 point line).
The win versus Miramar comes after a tough loss to Citrus College (14-1, #7 in the State). The Spartans return to action with league play on January 3rd at Imperial Valley College.
12/10/07 MiraCosta Continues Improved Play in Win
The Spartans play over the last two weekends is a definite sign of improvement. After their first win at the Antelope Valley Tournament and a very close loss to a tough Moorpark College team, the MiraCosta Men's team played their best basketball in a 77-53 win over Porterville College. The Spartans (2-9) were led by Thomas Kearns' 16 points and Cameron Flechsenhaar's 10 points and 16 rebounds.
The Spartans' win comes at an important time as they start league play this Wednesday at Palomar College at 5:00pm, and then return home to take on Citrus College (13-1) on Saturday at 7:00pm.
12/03/07 Spartans earn first Victory
In a close game the MiraCosta Basketball team won their first game in dramatic fashion. With 2.2 seconds left in the game and a tie score, Mike Brown hit a shot from near half court. The shot led the Spartans (1-9) into the semifinals of the Antelope Valley Tournament. Thomas Kearns led the Spartans in scoring with 24 points.
The Spartans' weekend also included a 5 point loss to Moorpark College (6-3 and # 13 in the south). Lin Chang finished with 22 points and 13 rebounds.
MiraCosta is in action next on Saturday December 8th for their home opener against Porterville College at 7:00pm.
9/10/07 Martinez Returns to Minot for Senior Year
Ricky Martinez, MiraCosta's MVP two years in a row (2004-05, 2005-06), will return to Minot St for his senior year of competition. After a strong junior year where he earned a starting position part way through the season, Ricky will be a major contributor for a Minot St. team that looks to have a good year.
9/10/07 Coburn Gets Head Coaching Job at McClintock HS in AZ
Jase Coburn, former point guard for the MiraCosta Spartans (2003-04) has moved from coach on the floor to head coach of his own high school program. After 3 years as an assistant coach both at the high school level and at Phoenix College, Coburn will take over a program that will undoubtedly get to the next level under his leadership.
02/20/07 KEARNS VOTED ALL-CONFERENCE
Thomas Kearns (Carlsbad HS) was voted to the all-conference 2nd team. Kearns is a 6-2 combo guard who averaged 17 points and 6 rebounds per game in league play. Hampered by an ankle injury early in the year and ongoing knee pain, Kearns fought his way through the season and led the Spartans in both scoring and rebounding.
Daniel Phair (El Camino HS)and Peter Wofford (La Costa Canyon HS) were voted honorable mention all-conference.
05/09/07 SPARTANS MOVING ON
Peter Wofford (SO) and Bethel Hailemichael (FR) will both move on to the next level. Hailemichael will play at Cal Lutheran University next year for Coach Rich Rider. CLU was the home of former Spartans Patrick Holmberg and Matt Adame, whom both had successful careers there.
Wofford will walk-on at Azusa Pacific University. APU competes in the very tough GSAC conference which features some of the best NAIA basketball in the country.

03/10/07 FORMER SPARTAN RECEIVES ACCOLADE

Former MiraCosta Spartan Derek Stockalper led the Cal Poly San Luis Obisbo Mustangs to the championship game of the Big West Conference tournament. Stockalper received 1st team all Big West honors for the second consecutive year while averaging 14 points per game, 7 rebounds per game, and he shot 50% from behind the 3 point line. While at MiraCosta Stockalper and teammate Chris Nelson led the Spartans to a 19-8 record and a trip to the state playoffs.
03/01/07 SPARTAN THE FOCUS OF SHORT DOCUMENTRY
Future MiraCosta Spartan Lin Chang, (6-9 - Beijing, China) has already attracted some attention from the American media. Chang, an incoming freshman who arrived in January, is the spot light of a short documentry on the SPARQ TRAINING website.
SPARQ, which is based in Portland Oregon, is a training company that speciallizes in developing and testing athletes around the world.
Coaches Clinic at MiraCosta on May 19th
MiraCosta College will host a Basketball Coaches Clinic on Saturday May 19th at 2:00pm. This is the 2nd annual clinic. This year's speakers include Herb Livsey (Atlanta Hawks), Brannon Hays (Metro St, CO), and Christopher Thomas (NIKE, 100% Hoops; IN). We are still working to confirm one or two more speakers.
The cost is $10.00 per coach.

02/17/07 MIRACOSTA ENDS SEASON
The Spartans end their season with a tough 66-62 loss to Mesa College
The Spartans were led in scoring by Thomas Kearns with 15 points, Daniel Phair with 13 points and Bethel Hailemichael who added 12 points.
Despite a nice run in the second half to take a 13 point lead, MiraCosta could not hold on for the win.
02/12/07 SPARTANS PLAY THEIR BEST BASKETBALL
On Saturday night the MiraCosta Spartans played their best basketball all year. In a 80-66 win over Grossmont College the Spartans had all eight players score, led by Peter Wofford's 19 point performance.
Other notable performances included Bethel Hailemichael's 15 points and Cameron Flechsenhaar's 6 points and 9 rebounds.
The Spartans have improved their play over the course of the season and are playing as well as any team in the league now. In their last eight games MCC is 4-4 and have very close losses to the first and second place teams in the league.
MiraCosta's last game of the year is Saturday Feb 17th at Mesa College at 7:00pm.
02/07/07 Spartans lose a close one
Wednesday night against the Southwestern Jaguars the young Spartans did everything they had to do to be in the game. With 42 seconds to play MiraCosta took the lead by 1 on a Peter Wofford offensive rebound put back. A transition layup by Jaguars' leading scorer Roman Leon in the last 15 seconds helped Southwestern College regain the lead and was enough for them to hold on. The Spartans were led in scoring by Thomas Kearns with 22 points.
The Spartans will play their last home game of the year Saturday at 7:00pm vs. Grossmont College.
2/05/07 Wofford leads Spartans to upset win 
Peter Wofford (La Costa Canyon HS), the lone sophomore for the MiraCosta Spartans showed how much difference a little experience can make. Wofford's 28 points 7 rebounds and 5 assists led the Spartans in a 78-73 win San Diego City College. Although the Spartans only played 7 players each contributed to the victory, which improves them to (4-9) in conference play. Other notables are that Thomas Kearns (Carlsbad HS) had 20 points and 8 rebounds while playing through an injury. Daniel Phair (El Camino HS) scored 16 points and 7 rebounds and Cameron Flechsenhaar (La Costa Canyon HS) contributed 10 points and 9 rebounds.
1/30/07
The Spartans played two tough games to finish the week last week. The first was against Miramar College and second was Imperial Valley College. On Thursday MiraCosta beat Miramar College 63-60. Late in the game Cameron Flechsenhaar made four key free-throws to finish the game. Tim Lavender, Peter Wofford and Daniel Phair also had notable performances.
On Saturday the Spartans made the toughest road trip of conference play to Imperial Valley (El Centro). IVC is in first place in conference and the Spartans gave them everything they could handle. Cameron Flechsenhaar and Daniel Phair led the way for the Spartans, but they didn't quite have enough for the upset. The final score was 64-72.
The Spartans return to action January 31st at home versus Cuyamaca College at 7:00pm.

Daniel Phair received conference player of the week honors for his play against Mesa College on Saturday night. Phair had a stellar game scoring 26 points on 8-10 shooting. He also held Mesa's leading scorer to 6 points.
This week the Spartans travel to playat Palomar (1/23), at Miramar (1/25) and at Imperial Valley (1/27)

The MiraCosta Spartans dropped a close game last night to cross-town rival Palomar College in overtime by a score of 72-75. The Spartans were lead in scoring by Daniel Phair with 20 points. Tim Lavender, a 6-7 Freshman forward (Brawley HS), added 19 points on 9 or 9 shooting.

The young Spartans dropped their last two league games to fall to a 1-3 record in league. In their first game back after the holiday break the Spartans lost a one point game to Imperial Valley College at the buzzer. After leading 13 points in the second half the Spartans fell behind only to retake the lead by one point. With 22 seconds IVC missed a shot, and after a scramble situation tipped the ball in with no time left on the clock to beat the Spartans 61-60.
Following the tough loss to IVC the Spartans traveled to Cuyamaca College to take the on the league leading Coyotes (4-0). Despite leading at various points in the game, the Spartans couldn't maintain their level of play to pull out the victory. The Spartans were lead in scoring by Daniel Phair (El Camino HS) and Thomas Kearns (Carlsbad HS) respectively.
The much improved Spartans will take on San Diego City College Tuesday 1/9/07 at 7:00pm and then go on the road to play Southwestern College Thursday (1/11/07) at 5:00pm and Saturday at Grossmont at 7:00pm.
12/19/06
The Spartans finished their last four games 2-2. In a tough game against the Miramar Jets MiraCosta gave up a lead late in the game and lost a close one to former MiraCosta assistant coach Nick Gehler and his Miramar team. The following day the Spartans competed very hard against an #11 ranked Citrus College team who just had too much in the end. This game rounded out three games in four days for the Spartans who resume league play on January 4th.
Currently the Spartans are tied for 2nd in league with a 1-1 record.

Led by Thomas Kearns' 13 points and a last second three-point shot by Peter Wofford the MiraCosta Spartans defeated their cross-town rivals Palomar College 55-54. MiraCosta is now 1-0 in league play. Read more in the North County Times article.

The Spartans finshed 1-1 over the weekend in the LA Southwest College Intensity Classic. In the early game on Saturday, MiraCosta was victorious in a marathon game that lasted four overtimes and had nine players foul out. The Spartans had a balanced effort that was led by Bethel Hailemichael's 28 points and 14 rebounds. Daniel Phair scored 20 points and had 6 assists. Thomas Kearns added 22 points on 8-11 shooting and had 8 points in the final overtime which were key in the victory.
