MiraCosta College - Intramurals

On Friday the MiraCosta Intramural program hosted a softball event that included more than twenty students. The game was seven innings and afterwords there was a home run derby for those who wanted to participate. Click here for pictures from the event.

Our last two tournaments of the semester are Soccer (Nov 20, 11-2pm) and Volleyball (Dec 2nd, 6-8pm)

On Halloween morning thirty six students and staff came to play in the Intramruals Dodgeball tournament. Some had costumes, others came as themselves but it didn't make a difference on how much they enjoyed themselves. Players were dipping, ducking and dodging. The gym was full of cheering and screaming as the competitive juices were evident. At the end, there was only one champion. Thank you to all of the participants.

On Friday thirty students and staff came out to play in the Intramural Tennis tournament which makes the largest turnout for a tennis tournament in program's four year history. The teams were split into two divisions, beginner and experienced which allowed each team to play against comparable skill level. The tournament lasted nearly three hours. Thank you to eveyone who came out to participate.

The next two events for Intramurals are Dodgeball (Halloween Saturday 11am-1pm) and Softball on November 6th, Friday, from 12 noon to 2pm. For more info please contact Pat Conahan at pconahan@miracosta.edu.

It was just announced that at the Dodgeball event on Halloween morning (11 am), there will be prizes given to the best costumed team. The winner will win gift cards to In & Out Restaurant. To sign up for the event contact Pat Conahan at pconahan@miracosta.edu or click here for more information.

Of the students that attended the Ultimate Frisbee tournament last Friday, almost all of them have played before. A group of about eight students actually play twice a week, meeting each Tuesday and Thursday at the clock tower at 9:30am before deciding where to set up their game. The other participants had attended other Ultimate Frisbee events which meant that the particpants were experienced and the game was competitive.

Our next events are Tennis (Friday 10/23), Dodgeball (Saturday 10/31) and Softball (Fri 11/6).

For the third event of the semester the MiraCosta IM department hosted a basketball tournament that went great. Last Wednesday night students and staff came out and participated for nearly two hours. After a hard fought battle by all the teams, a champion was crowned. Click here to see more pictures.

On Saturday 9/19 MiraCosta Intramurals hosted the first Soccer tournament of the semester. Nearly fifty students and staff came out to participate in the hot sun and after over two hours of games, a champion was crowned. To see more pictures of the event click here.

On Thursday May 7th and Friday May 8th the MiraCosta Intramural program hosted the last two events of the Spring semester. The basketball event attracted a lot of the same faces, and although there weren't enough teams to run a formal tournament the participants played for about two hours before calling it quits.

On Friday at the Volleyball event after a few late arrivals there was a match played between a student team and the staff team. On the other court there was a great game including primarily of Puente students and a few students from the CLC. Click here for more pictures

On Friday at the Ultimate Frisbee tournament twenty six people came and played for over two hours. Four teams were made and two fields showcased the athleticism and team work that goes into the game of Ultimate Frisbee. Even those who came with some hesitance about the event were fully engaged and enjoying themselves once they started to play. Click here for more pictures

Our next tournament is Basketball on May 7th at 4pm and Volleyball on May 8th at noon. These will be our last two events of the semester.

On April 16th the MCC Intramural program hosted a volleyball tournament that showcased six teams. It was a very competitive tournament especially with the Staff team led by Andrea Petri (Italian Instructor).

On April 24th the IM Soccer tournament had six teams and fifty one participants. Teams from the soccer class, FLS, International Students and a few other teams with students fought for the title of champion. In the end it was "Los Ganadores FC" who earned the crown.

Our next event, Ultimate Frisbee, is Friday May 1st. Ultimate is a fun, fast paced game that is very easy to learn. The event starts at 11am and will be played on the upper soccer fields. For more info email pconahan@miracosta.edu.

The champions of the Intramural Basketball Tournament represented the The Tutoring and Academic Support Center Champions. They are pictured below along with other participants from the tournament.

Our next tournament is a Volleyball Tournament on Thursday April 16th from 6-8pm. We also have a Soccer Tournament on Friday April 24th. For more information please contact Patrick Conahan.

Seven teams participated in the doubles tournament which lasted three hours on friday afternoon. Skill levels varied but there were some very competitive matches through out the day. The Champions are pictured below holding the "Champions" t-shirt. Although it wasn't planned initially the Intramurals program is going to schedule another date for a second tournament. Stay tuned . . .

Despite the fact that the soccer tournament was pushed back two weeks the turnout was great (6 teams) and the play was very competitive. There was a new champion crowned, Team Oceanside, which had previously played in the last few tournaments before winning.

The Dodgeball tournament was held on Friday February 27th and also had six teams compete. Teams represented the Women's Basketball Team, a weight training class as well as instructor Pablo Martin's communication class. Other than a few soar shoulders the next day the tournament ran without problems or injuries.

Because of the heavy rain we have decided to postpone the Soccer Tournament to February 20th at 11:00am. There are 7 teams registered for the previous tournament but we are still accepting registrations for the new date. For more information please contact Patrick Conahan at pconahan@miracosta.edu.

The last tournament for the semester brought with it the largest field of participants. Over 80 students and staff came out to play soccer in what is the program's most popular event. Program director Pat Conahan commented that "it was the most talent that we've had in any one soccer tournament and the play reflected it. We had some great games, and overall each team was more competitive" After every team played three games in bracket play the top two teams from each group made the semifinals which eventually was won by "Los Guapos FC." Los Guapos, pictured below, also won a tournament last year as well.

Although it is a game that is not well known, once students learn to play it, Ultimate becomes one of the most popular games there is. After a short introduction to the rules, over twenty students played Ultimate Frisbee for almost two hours. At the end, there was a champion who received a Champion's T-Shirt and a gift certificate to In and Out Burgers.

The championship game was very competitive and was a close game, but the winning team held on to a 7-5 victory. If you would like to learn more about Ultimate Frisbee or any of the Intramural events contact

The MiraCosta Intramural sports program is excited to announce the ULTIMATE FRISBEE tournament will be held on Friday November 21st at 11:00am. ULTIMATE FRISBEE is a face paced, high energy game that students and staff are sure to enjoy. For more information on how to play ULTIMATE FRISBEE click here.

The Intramural doubles tennis tournament brought field of twenty players that represented varying skill levels. There was an advanced bracket and a beginner bracket and after more than two hours of play the champions emerged from each group (pictured below.) The IM staff would like to thank each participant for playing and also would like to congratulate the champions in each division.

Last night five teams competed in the coed intramural volleyball tournament. These teams collectively brought 35 students and staff of varying skill levels to participate. The tournament lasted two hours and culminated with a very competitive championship game between Team Kirby (picture below) and Team Mike. In the end, Team Kirby earned the title of Champion. Congratulations.

With over 40 paricipants (pictured above) the Dodgeball tournament was very competitive. A team representing Steve Wezniak's class made the semifinals along with the Women's Basketball team, and a team of random students. The best team in that group however was Team Klein (pictured below). After about two hours of Dodgeball the tournament culminated with a heated game between the Women's Basketball team and Team Klein. Other teams represented the tutors on campus, the international student program and numerous other individual students. The IM staff would like to thank all the participants.
