MiraCosta men's soccer tied 1-1 on Friday vs. San Diego City College (State Ranking 9th). This was a very important result for the team and should help them later on if they produce results in the first half of conference play.

San Diego City opened up the scoring in the 42nd minute of the game (1st half) off of a beautiful combination that sliced right between central MiraCosta players. MiraCosta responded in the opening minutes of the second half off of a Mario Torres goal assisted by Jared Brett.

Notably the San Diego city goal keeper handled the ball outside of the 18yard box that denied Mario Torres a break away goal. The City goalkeeper was red carded for this foul. In the final minutes of the game another City player was issued a red car leaving the ending moments 11 vs. 9. MiraCosta pressured because of the numerical advantage as City defended frantically. A MiraCosta long throw into play was just put over the cross bar of the goal during this offensive that could have won the game if it had been on target.

MiraCosta Drops Conference Opener

MiraCosta men's soccer lost a close game 3-1 on Wednesday vs. Palomar College. At the end of the first half with both teams creating opportunities within the goal box the game remained tied at 0-0.

In the second half neither team missed a beat as both teams had momentum for a spell and also defend under pressure for periods of time. MiraCosta appeared to have the upper hand from the 60th-77th minute of play but were unable to capitalize on the opportunities they created around the goal area.

In the 80th minute Palomar scored on a counter attack taking a 1-0 lead. Minutes later MiraCosta equalized in the 85th minute tying the game at 1-1.

With the clock winding down Palomar was awarded a free kick just outside the left corner of the MiraCosta penalty box. A perfectly timed cross with Palomar players crashing the back door connected on what would be the game winning goal for Palomar. MiraCosta pushed a player forward in the final four minutes of play trying to even the game but Palomar took advantage of the numerical unbalance scoring their third goal of the game.

MiraCosta Uses Every Rostered Player In Last Game Before Conference Play

According to Camperell "the team was not successful today from a win loss stand point but I was able to use every rostered player and this was my focus for this game...this opportunity to use every player was very important for our future/ conference success".

In the 21st minute of play Riverside equalized the game off of a rebounded shot that came off the MiraCosta goalkeeper Rigoberto Aquino.

In the second half cards became an issue for MiraCosta. Nick Carter received his second yellow card of the game resulting in a soft red and ejection. Riverside was able to take advantage of this by scoring again playing patient possession oriented soccer.

With 15 minutes to play MiraCosta made a tactical substitution that allowed them to push a third player forward. Within moments the sub (Kevin Brenner) was given a straight red card as he was chasing behind a riverside player when his legs entangled and tripped him up.

In spite of playing 9 against 11 MiraCosta managed to equalize tying the game in the 88th minute of play. Calvin Miguel made a run from his deep position on the field cutting through several players before slotting a ball through to Mitchell Greene who capitalized and scored. Unfortunately the celebration came to a quick halt as Riverside broke free down the left side and then pulled the ball back across for the game winner with seconds left on the clock.

MiraCosta College Men's Soccer Selects 24 Players

On August 15th, the inaugural MiraCosta College men's soccer program began a four day open tryout opportunity for all male students interested in playing intercollegiate soccer at the College. After an intense four days where 43 prospects reported 24 players have been selected for the new men's team.  The team will be coached by Evan Camperell. Since his hire in January, Camperell who has five years of head intercollegiate soccer coaching experience at the  NCAA, NAIA, and now COA has accepted the challenge of building this team from the ground up. However this is not a new experience for Camperell who started the men's program at College of the Southwest (New Mexico) an NAIA program. He has also served as the Head Men's and Women's Coach at Alliant International University-San Diego (NAIA) and as the Head Women's Coach at Eastern Nazarene (Massachusetts) an NCAA program.

Upon his hire, Camperell immediately tabbed Jem Doonan as his assistant. Doonan has 30 years of coaching experience 27 of them as a head coach. Most recently he has served as the Head Men's Coach at Cuyamaca College and also as Camperell's assistant at Alliant International University.

The MiraCosta squad will feature a combination of incoming freshman and college transfers. On paper the team looks to be competitive. The solid mixture of talented youth and experienced college transfers will form the foundation of the new MiraCosta College men's soccer program. The players and the coaching staff now have the challenge of keeping this foundation strong.

Camperell crafted the schedule to include a diverse selection of opponents, including teams from Northern California, Orange County, Los Angeles County, Riverside County, San Bernardino County, and San Diego County. The first match for the new men's team will take place at Cypress College on August 31st 4:00pm. The first home match will be played against Compton College on September 4th 4:00pm at the Oceanside Main Campus.
