11/10/2008 SPARTANS BEGIN SEASON WITH A VICTORY
The MiraCosta College women's basketball team got the season started in a positive direction with a 62-43 victory over Reedley College on Saturday evening in Spartan Gym.
The game began slowly, with both teams struggling to score baskets. The Spartans rotated 12 players in and out of the game, and could not put the ball in the basket despite numerous attempts in the paint. With just under 7:30 remaining, the Spartans trailed 18-12. However, MiraCosta found their rhythm and outscored Reedley 15-3 the rest of the way, resulting in a 26-21 Spartan lead at the half.
To start the second half, Reedley quickly reestablished themselves, and tied the game at 30-30 with 14:54 to go. MiraCosta responded with increased defensive pressure and continued fast substitution patterns. The Spartans' depth seemed to wear down the Tigers, and MiraCosta closed out the game on a 32-13 run.
The game was marked with a high number of fouls, and fortunately for MiraCosta, Reedley only made 7 of 27 free throw attempts. MiraCosta fared slightly better at 17 of 27 from the line, including 5 of 5 by freshman Megan Conroy, and 6 of 8 from sophomore Tiffany Hunter. Hunter and Conroy were the Spartans' two leading scorers tallying 18 and 14 points respectively, despite each playing only in one half.
MiraCosta travels on Wednesday to play Santa Monica College, the defending champion of the Western State conference. Game time is 5:00pm.
8/25/2008 SPARTANS START PREPARING FOR THE 2008-2009 BASKETBALL SEASON
The MiraCosta College women's basketball team has begun their preseason workouts as they prepare for the 2008-2009 basketball season. The Spartans are looking to move the program forward in their second season following a 15-year hiatus in which the college did not sponsor a women's basketball team.
Last year's "back to basketball" team finished with a 7-20 overall record, and went 4-10 in the Pacific Coast Conference. However, the record belies the fact that the team was highly competitive, despite playing most of the conference season with only six players, all of whom were freshmen.
This year, with a greatly expanded and improved roster, the players and coaches are working towards moving the program into the upper echelon of the PCC.
4/1/2008 TIFFANY HUNTER EARNS ALL-PCC HONORS
Spartans freshman Tiffany Hunter was voted to the all-PCC first team by the conference coaches. Hunter led the conference in scoring at 20.5 points, and was the second leading rebounder, averaging 10.8 rebounds per game. She also was in the top ten conference leaders for field-goal percentage, free-throw percentage, assists, and steals. She also posted rebounding/scoring double-doubles in 10 of 14 conference games.
2/25/2008 SPARTANS CONCLUDE "BACK TO BASKETBALL" SEASON ON A HIGH NOTE
With a convincing 77-50 victory over Cuyamaca College, the MiraCosta College Spartans finished the "Back to Basketball" season in fine fashion.
MiraCosta built an early lead in the first half, but a 5 minute Spartan scoring drought allowed the Coyotes to get close at 29-25 with seven minutes remaining in the first half. However, the Spartans closed strongly, and entered halftime leading 42-31.
In the second half, the 9 point lead quickly grew to the high teens, and Cuymaca could not muster a rally. The Spartans pushed the lead over 20 with 5 minutes remaining, and the final margin of 27 points (and 77 total) represented conference bests for MiraCosta.
The Spartans were led by Tiffany Hunter's 37 points and 14 rebounds. Sage LeBlanc added 17 points, including 7 of 7 from the free throw line, and Brooke Harlin narrowly missed a double-double, posting 9 points and 13 rebounds.
The Spartans end their "back to basketball" season with an overall record of 7-20, including a 4-10 mark in the Pacific Coast Conference.

2/20/2008 SPARTANS LOSE CLOSE GAME AT GROSSMONT
MiraCosta travelled to face Grossmont College, who had soundly defeated the Spartans by 24 points on January 26. MiraCosta showed plenty of resolve and toughness in a very close contest, as the Spartans played only 6 players, and 5 of them played over 33 minutes each. In the end, Grossmont's superior depth wore down MiraCosta, and Grossmont earned a 56-50 victory.
The game was marked by poor shooting, as the two teams combined to go 3-25 from the three-point line, and had only 37 total field goals in the game. Grossmont separated itself by making 17 of 22 free throws, while MiraCosta only made 12 of 18.
Tiffany Hunter (21 points, 13 rebounds) and Sage LeBlanc (12 points) were the Spartans' only double digit scorers.
BOX SCORE (pdf)
The week's split left the Spartans with an overall record of 7-20, including a 4-10 record in the Pacific Coast Conference.
