In Mulville's first season (2007-2008) at MiraCosta, the Spartans were 7-20 overall, including a 4-10 record in in the Pacific Coast Conference. Despite playing most of the year shorthanded (only 6 players for the last 10 games of the season), the team was very competitive and continued to improve throughout the season.
Mulville began his career in 1995 as an assistant coach at the University of La Verne, an NCAA Division III school, working under Coach Terry Boesel. After 3 years helping rebuild the La Verne program, Coach Mulville was promoted to head coach.
Mulville quickly found success at La Verne, and compiled an overall record of 29-21, including a 19-9 record in the SCIAC conference. Dan’s teams finished in third place in each of his two seasons at the helm, and narrowly missed the playoffs both years.
After the 1999-2000 season, Dan moved up to the NCAA Division II level, joining Cal Poly Pomona as the first assistant coach. The Broncos finished 17-10 overall, and earned a 5th place finish in the CCAA with a 13-9 league record.
After one season at Pomona, Mulville returned to his alma mater, U.C. San Diego, as first assistant coach. Competing without scholarships in the scholarship CCAA conference, Mulville helped UCSD improve in wins and conference placing each of his three years there.
Following the 2004 season, Dan coached at Righetti High School in Santa Maria, where he was the assistant coach for the varsity program. Righetti went 20-5, tied for the PAC-5 league championship, and advanced to the third round of the CIF playoffs.
After prepping at Loyola High School in Los Angeles, Mulville attended U.C. San Diego and was a player on the men's basketball team from 1985-1987. He earned his B.A. in Urban Studies and Planning from UCSD in 1990, and later completed a master's in education at the University of La Verne.
