Workshop Descriptions
COMMUNICATION SKILLS & CONFLICT RESOLUTION
In this session you will identify strengths and weaknesses of your personal communication style, and learn techniques to resolve conflict within your group. You will also examine communication barriers and how you can effectively navigate through them in order to improve communication lines within your group or organization.
DIVERSE COMMUNITIES
Successful managers and leaders understand and educate themselves on changing demographics within the community, the nation, and the world. This session will explore the impact that a diverse community may have in your personal interactions with others. You will also be challenged to re-examine your personal values and beliefs, and discover stereotypes and biases that you may hold. The workshop will help students develop an appreciation of difference and underscore the richness that diversity can bring to a group or organization.
LEADERSHIP STYLES
Are you aware that you have your own leadership style? This workshop will explore various leadership styles and discuss how they interplay with each other. You will also learn how to work more effectively with others who have different styles. Strategies on how to improve your leadership skills will also be provided.
TIME MANAGEMENT
Being able to juggle a busy schedule is a fundamental skill of leadership.
This workshop will help you get organized so you can utilize your time more efficiently, help you see time budgeting as a valuable leadership skill, and help you identify priorities so you can accomplish goals.
CREATING NETWORKS
Developing networks and creating alliances with others is an important skill for leaders, both on campus and in the community. This workshop will explore approaches to building personal and work-related relationships, as well as discuss ways to break down many of the perceived barriers between campus or community organizations. It will also help students to see the importance of reaching out to others as allies.
VISION AND GOAL SETTING
Leadership requires the individual to envision a different reality, establish goals to achieve the vision, and communicate to the group steps necessary to meeting the vision. This workshop will explore techniques in creating vision statements, goals, objectives and action plans.
ETHICAL DECISION-MAKING
This workshop will discuss strategies to practicing values-driven leadership through identifying the difference between what a leader may want to do verses what a leader should do. Through case studies, scenarios, discussion and debate, techniques for handling very difficult and ambiguous situations will be explored. Models that can assist a decision-maker in making the right choice will be examined.
TEAMWORK AND COLLABORATION
Teamwork is more than wearing the team uniform. Teamwork is the fusion of different elements into a powerful goal-oriented force. This workshop will discuss the group formation process and how it evolves over time. The session will explore how individual differences between group members can be a strength instead of a weakness. Techniques and principles of proper and effective collaboration will also be presented.
PROFESSIONALISM
Whether you like it or not, you will be judged by the quality and professionalism of your work. How you represent yourself, your employer or organization says much about you as a leader. This workshop will focus on how to develop professional skills and traits that will serve you in the work environment.
