CSU Transfer Information

California State University is the largest system of higher education in the nation with campuses located throughout the state. Its campuses provide an environment in which scholarship, research, and creative, artistic, and professional activities are valued and supported. While each campus within the system has its own unique geographic and curricular character, all campuses offer undergraduate and graduate instruction for professional and occupational programs as well as broad liberal education. The CSU offers bachelors and masters degrees in some 200 subject areas. Campuses are located in Bakersfield, Channel Islands, Chico, Dominguez Hills, Fresno, Fullerton, Hayward, Humboldt, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Monterey Bay, Northridge, Pomona, Sacramento, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, San Luis Obispo, San Marcos, Sonoma, Stanislaus, and Vallejo (California Maritime Academy).

Definition of a CSU Transfer Student

The California State University generally considers an undergraduate transfer student one who has earned college credit after the summer immediately following high school graduation.

Students who have earned fewer than 60 transferable semester units1 are considered lower-division transfer students, and those with 60 or more transferable units are considered upper-division transfers. Students who have completed 60 transferable semester units may be admitted on the basis of upper-division transfer requirements; and be considered to have achieved junior class standing.

The California State University assigns high priority to California Community College transfer students who have completed the first two years of the baccalaureate program, including transfer students applying for impacted programs.

CSU Admission Requirements for Transfer

All students may choose to meet the admission requirements for upper-division transfers but only those students who have the required grade point average and test scores to enter CSU as freshmen may transfer as lower-division students.

Upper-Division Applicants – A  prospective upper-division transfer student must complete at least 60 transferable semester units with a minimum grade point average of 2.0. However may transfer up to 70 transferable community college units to CSU. Within the 60 units, a minimum of 30 semester units of courses which meet CSU general education requirements must be completed with a grade of C or better in each course. The 30 semester units must include at least 9 semester (12 quarter) units in English language (one course each in written communication, oral communication, and critical thinking) and at least 3 semester (4 quarter) units in mathematics/quantitative reasoning.

  • Most CSUs require a minimum of 60 transferable units to transfer. However, some CSU schools may reduce this unit total on a year by year basis. For updated information, please visit the following website @ www.csumentor.com and click "Is my school accepting applications?"
  • It is advisable to complete English language (Area A) and mathematics/quantitative reasoning (Area B4) requirements by the following deadlines which are required by some CSU’s (i.e., SDSU, CSUSM):

Fall semester applicants – by the end of the preceding spring term

Spring semester applicants – by the end of the preceding summer terms

Individual campuses should be contacted regarding their deadlines for completing these requirements or seek assistance in the University Transfer Center.

CSU General Education Requirements

A bachelor’s degree from the CSU has a dual purpose: to provide a broad education and to prepare students for specific professional and occupational goals.  In order to receive a broad education, all students earning a degree from the CSU must complete a pattern of courses called General Education-Breadth (GE-Breadth).  GE-Breadth includes lower-division and upper-division course work.  There are two ways for MiraCosta College students to fulfill lower-division GE-Breadth prior to transfer:

  • GE-Breadth requires a minimum of 48 semester units; usually 39 of the semester units are lower-division courses, and at least 9 semester units are upper-division.  California Community Colleges can certify courses that meet the 39 semester units of lower-division GE-Breadth.  Certification can be completed by subject area (Area A, B, C, D, and/or E) or in total up to 39 semester units (called full certification).
  • Minimum grades are not specified for GE-Breadth certification.  However, even though a California Community College may certify a course for general education with a grade below a C, the course must have been completed with at least a C if used to meet admission requirements.

  • California Community College students may complete the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) to meet the lower-division portion of GE-Breadth.  IGETC requires a minimum C grade in each course used and full certification prior to transfer (a grade of C- is not acceptable). Exceptions to full certification for good cause may be made by MiraCosta College’s Director of Transfer and Articulation Programs for up to two courses.

Most Advanced Placement (AP) exams may be used to complete CSU GE-Breadth requirements as long as a student has earned a score of 3, 4, or 5, and will be earning full or subject-area certification.  Selected higher level International Baccalaureate (IB) exams may also be certified with scores of 5 or higher.

The list of acceptable exams, units awarded, and subject area the exam may be applied to is available in the MiraCosta College University Transfer Center.
