Workshops Offered at
MiraCosta
A graduate school workshop will be offered
this fall and spring semester. Following the workshop, students will also have
to opportunity to participate in a breakout session with lunch
provided (the breakout session takes place one week after each
workshop), where students can meet with faculty from each of the disciplines.
Workshops will also be offered on getting into
medical, dental, law, and business school.
Selecting a Graduate Program
There a several ways to rank graduate schools. Often
academic graduate schools (e.g., anthropology, communications,
physics, psychology) are ranked based on the quality and number of
research articles that their faculty publish.
Another way of ranking graduate school is based on how well they
meet the needs of their graduate students. Things to consider
are:
- Information they provide to prospective students,
- Preparation
for a broad range of careers,
- Preparation for Teaching,
- Professional development opportunities,
- Career guidance
and placement services,
- Number of years needed to complete a degree,
- Quality of mentoring,
- Climate of the program, and
- Students' overall
satisfaction.
These are just the areas that were investigated
in 'The 2000 National Doctoral Program Survey.' Visit their
website to rank the programs in the fields that you are considering
for graduate school.

National Doctoral Program Survey," a website that ranks graduate
schools from the perspective of the students.
Timeline for Applying to Graduate Programs & Letters of Recommendation
The application process varies depending on whether you are
applying to an academic, business, law, or medical program.
Keep in mind that prestigious graduate schools require more of their
applicants, whereas less known programs tend to be more flexible in
their admission criteria. Importantly, making connections
(e.g., by e-mail, face to face at a conference) helps graduate
school faculty to gain a better understanding of who you are, your
interests, and why you want to be in their graduate program.
