Independent and Out of State

In addition to state-supported colleges and universities in California, there are many outstanding independent institutions in the state. There are also many colleges, independent and public, throughout the United States to which MiraCosta College students can transfer. Each of these institutions has its own unique requirements for admission. Information about these colleges, including catalogs and other printed materials, is available in the University Transfer Center. Additional information is available on the Internet, which can be accessed either at home or in the University Transfer Center. If you plan to transfer to an independent or out-of-state school, obtain the school’s catalog. This will enable you and your counselor to plan an appropriate educational program.

Although admission requirements differ at various colleges and universities, students who transfer to these schools are given credit for most of their community college course work. Virtually all universities and colleges give credit for general education courses and for courses designed for transfer to the University of California. Completion of IGETC will meet general education requirements for many private universities. Consult the University Transfer Center for more information.

Financial Aid may be a primary factor in making it possible for a student to attend an independent or out-of-state school. There are many forms of financial assistance available which make the actual cost of attending no greater than UC or CSU. Students should apply for scholarships, grants, loans, and work-study awards from all possible sources – federal, state, institutional, and private.
