I have never been to college, and want to transfer to a college or university:
If you have decided to attend MiraCosta College, the sooner you apply to MCC, the easier it is for you to get the specific classes you need to transfer.
Students that are interested in transferring to a university traditionally fall into one of two categories.
- 1) I have an idea of where I want to transfer and/or I have an idea of what I want to study.
Not all universities and colleges have all the majors. You need to check with the specific university or college to make sure they offer the major you want. At the University Transfer Center we have materials that list all the majors for not only the CSU and UC system, but also the independent schools and out of state schools.
You and your counselor should decide which transfer plan is best for you.
CSU: If you are planning to transfer to a CSU school, you will be working from a CSU GE list or IGETC + prep for major list to create an educational plan specifically tailored to meet your individual goals. Most of the CSU schools require a minimum of 60 units for transfer; each CSU school has unique requirements that do not necessarily meet another institution’s requirements. Some CSU schools also have impacted programs and higher grade point average requirements for admission. Please consult with the University Transfer Center for the most up to date information.
UC: If you are planning to transfer to a UC school, you will be working from an IGETC, specialized transfer program, or the general UC admission requirement list + prep for major to create an educational plan specifically tailored to meet your individual goals. You must have a minimum of 60 units to transfer as a junior to a UC school. Each UC school may require a competitive grade point average depending on the major you choose. Please consult the University Transfer Center for the most up to date information.
Independent and Out of State School: Each of the Independent and Out of State schools require a specific educational plan tailored to meet their admission requirements. We suggest that you order the catalog from the college or university you wish to attend. You and your counselor can then go over specific transfer requirements during your counseling appointment.
Please work with a counselor in the Counseling Department or the University Transfer Center to make sure you understand the transfer requirements and create your educational plan. If you are a DSPS or EOPS student, the counselors in these specialized offices can meet your needs.

Coun 100 - Career/Life Planning
This course is designed to inform and assist students in making appropriate and satisfying career choices. Using self-evaluation instruments, students identify interests, abilities, values, and goals. Topics include the labor market, job search strategies, self exploration, and integrating a career into a physically and emotionally healthy lifestyle. (This is a 3 unit class that is Cal State transferable.)
Professors who teach the career planning class are professional career counselors with work experience in a variety of settings and with a variety of populations.
Center for Career Studies and Services
Check out the MCC Center for Career Studies and Services. At the Career Services Center you will be able to access: Individual Career Counseling, Career Assessment tools (including interests, skills, values and personality clarification as they relate to careers), job search strategies, employment opportunities both on and off campus, resume writing, interviewing techniques, access to computerized career information systems, on-campus interviewing, dressing for success and more!
It may take some time to find a career interest and major. While you are exploring, use these tips to help you pick classes:
In most cases, whether you are transferring or not, you will need to take general education classes. See the following formula for transfer or an AA degree:
General Education + major requirements + electives = transfer or AA degree
The general education classes are designed to help you explore a variety of areas of study before narrowing down your specialty and major requirement classes.
The Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (also called IGETC) has 5 areas of study that focus on English, math, science, social science, arts and humanities.
Career Tip: Use the general breadth requirements of IGETC to explore different subjects that could be potential majors or careers.
Class Tip: While making your career planning decisions, start taking English and math immediately. Most colleges would like to see you have math and English done at the time you fill out your application. From here also choose others areas of interest such as arts, social sciences or humanities classes.
Note: Unless you have taken math or English at another college or have AP credit, you will need to take an assessment test to place into the appropriate math and English classes.

I have been to college elsewhere; I want to transfer.
Since you have been to college elsewhere, and want to transfer to another college or university, you need to have your transcripts reviewed by a counselor to determine the following:
- Will the units/credits/hours completed at your previous institution(s) satisfy requirements for the institution that you want to transfer to?
- How many more units will I need to complete at MCC before I can transfer to another university?
- Which specific courses do I need to complete before I transfer?
- When do I need to apply to transfer?
These are critical questions that need answers and these answers take considerable time and require a 30 minute counseling appointment. Please call (760) 795-6880 to make an appointment.
After you have completed 12 units at MCC, you and your counselor may request a formal evaluation of your transcripts through the MCC evaluation office.

I might attend MCC, so I want to know how the Transfer process would work for me.
Transferring from MiraCosta College to a 4 year university or college requires a variety of steps, and those steps vary depending on the institution that a student wants to transfer to. At MCC, our goal is to transfer a student as a junior, unless a different goal is stated by the student.
To transfer as a junior, a student must complete the following steps:
- Complete minimum college or university admission requirements.
- Complete as much applicable coursework in the major as possible prior to transfer and some universities require completion of all prep for major prior to transfer.
- Apply to the college or university on time.
Completing the above requirements can make a student eligible, but the true goal is for the student to become admissible. Taking coursework in a specific sequence, taking math and English immediately, completing major coursework, and earning good grades are all key components in making a student admissible.
In addition, the college or university must be willing to admit transfer students. Our website provides information on transfer admission based on where a majority of our students transfer. MCC students transfer all over the United States, so lack of information on the website does not mean you cannot transfer to another institution. Conducting personal research for an appropriate institution and strategizing with a counselor can open up many different options.
