What is Synchronous Online Tutoring? (back to questions)

  • College-wide online tutoring service for the following subjects.
  • Provides a high tech, high touch learning experience.
  • Accessible to students who are enrolled in specific classes.
  • Services available for distance learners and traditional in-class students.
  • Connects students to paraprofessional and peer tutors with extensive tutorial experience.
  • Utilizes the CCC Confer platform to deliver services.

  • Allows easy access to tutoring at times convenient to students.
  • Extremely valuable for students with lots of responsibilities and little time.
  • Features three communication tools: live internet chat, application sharing, and telephone conferencing.
  • Contains a number of valuable resources designed to enhance student success.
  • Provides a powerful environment for the online learning experience.
  • Creates a sense of community for distance learning students.

How does Synchronous Online Tutoring work? (back to questions)

  • Students access Online Tutoring through CCC Confer, the college’s powerful distance learning educational software.
  • Students sign up for Online Tutoring by contacting the Tutoring and Academic Support Center.
  • Online Tutoring occurs through:
    • Real time conversation via a dedicated chat room, using internet and/or telephone.
    • The use of an interactive whiteboard and application sharing technology.
    • Study skills information is provided to help students with test-taking, time management, and note-taking techniques.

What do I need to Join a Synchronous Online Tutoring Session? (back to questions)

  • Either a computer or a telephone line is necessary to participate. Using both is not required.
  • Use of both a computer and a telephone are recommended for best communication.
  • For minimum computer requirements, please visit the CCC Confer website.
  • The telephone access number will be a Toll-Free number. Please note that if you use a cell phone, you may be charged to use airtime.
  • Students sign up for Online Tutoring by contacting the Tutoring and Academic Support Center.
  • Download step by step instructions for online tutoring.

Who are the Online Tutors? (back to questions)

  • Trained peer, paraprofessional, and professional tutors with extensive tutoring experience.
  • Have demonstrated expertise in a specific subject area.
  • Trained in providing services in a web-based environment.
  • Familiar with the needs of online students.
  • Approved tutors by faculty teaching the courses.
