PC Instructions


     

PC: Download Internet Explorer

SURF requires Microsoft's Internet Explorer -- version 6.0 or better.  Go to Microsoft's website to download Internet Explorer.

PC: Enable Cookies (v. 6.0)

Cookies must be enabled in order to use SURF.

  1. Launch Internet Explorer.
  2. Select Tools.
  3. Select Internet Options.
  4. Select Privacy.
  5. Your security level should be no higher than Medium High.
  6. Click OK.

PC: Enable Cookies (Ver. 5.0)

Cookies must be enabled in order to use SURF.

  1. Launch Internet Explorer.
  2. Select Tools.
  3. Select Internet Options.
  4. Select Security.
  5. Click Custom Level.
  6. Under "Allow cookies that are stored on your computer and Allow per-session cookies not stored)", select Enable.
  7. Click OK twice.

PC: Set Caching

For SURF to display the most updated information, Internet browsers must check for new information every visit to the page.

  1. Launch Internet Explorer.
  2. Select Tools.
  3. Select Internet Options.
  4. Select General.
  5. In Temporary Internet Files, click Settings.
  6. Select Every visit to the page in the section Check for newer versions of stored pages.
  7. Click OK twice.

PC: Enable SSL

Because SURF is hosted on a secured server, SSL (Secure Sockets Layers) must be enabled in order to access the website.

  1. Launch Internet Explorer.
  2. Select Tools.
  3. Select Internet Options.
  4. Select Advanced, check-off Use SSL 2.0 and Use SSL 3.0 within the Security section.
  5. Click OK twice.

PC: Enable JavaScript

JavaScript is required for SURF to function properly.

  1. Launch Internet Explorer.
  2. If you don't have Java installed in your computer, click here Java
  3. Select Tools.
  4. Select Internet Options.
  5. Select Security.
  6. Click Custom Level.
  7. Select Enable for these three categories: a) Active Scripting, b) Allow Paste Operation via Script, and c) Scripting of Java Applets.
  8. Click OK twice. Use your Internet browser's Refresh button to see the changed results.

Delete Browsing History for IE v7

Temporary Internet Files, Cookies, History, Form Data, and Passwords that are saved in the computer may contain past data/information which may affect future attempts for successful login.

  1. Launch Internet Explorer.
  2. Select the Tools menu.
  3. Select Delete Browsing History....
  4. Click the Delete all... button.
  5. Click the checkbox Also delete files and settings stored by add-ons to add a check mark, then click the Yes button.

PC: Clear History

Webpages which have been saved in the browser's history file may interfere with future attempts of successful login. Clearing these files may avoid problems.
  1. Launch Internet Explorer.
  2. Select Tools.
  3. Select Internet Options.
  4. Select General.
  5. Click Clear History.
  6. Select Yes on the panel "Are you sure you want Windows to delete your history on visited Websites?"

PC: Clear Cache/Cookies

Browser files saved in the computer may contain past data/information which may affect future attempts for successful login.

  1. Launch Internet Explorer.
  2. Select Tools.
  3. Select Internet Options.
  4. Click Delete Cookies.
  5. Select OK on the panel "Delete all cookies in the Temporary Internet Files folder?"
  6. Click Delete Files.
  7. Select OK on the panel "Delete all files in the Temporary Internet Files folder". Ignore "Delete all offline content".

PC: Enable Session Cookies

When the error Multiple web sessions are being generated occurs, you must enable third party cookies on your computer.
  1. Launch Internet Explorer.
  2. Select Tools.
  3. Select Internet Options.
  4. Click Privacy.
  5. Click Advanced located in the Settings box.
  6. Check on Override automatic cookie handling.
  7. Check on Always allow session cookies.
  8. Select OK on the Advanced Privacy Settings window.

PC: Disable Password Auto-Save

If the auto-complete feature is active in the browser and the SURF password is updated, there may be conflicts which will affect successful login to SURF.
  1. Launch Internet Explorer.
  2. Select Tools.
  3. Select Internet Options.
  4. Select Content.
  5. Click AutoComplete....
  6. Remove the checkmark from Forms and User names and passwords on forms.
  7. Click Clear Forms.
  8. Click OK on the panel "Clear all previously saved form entries except passwords?"
  9. Click Clear Passwords.
  10. Click OK on the panel "Clear all previously saved passwords?".
  11. Click OK twice.
  12. Relaunch the browser (File > Shutdown), then restart.

PC: Pop-Up Blocker

Installation of Windows XP Service Pack 2 implements a Windows pop-up blocker on your computer. If you already have a pop-up blocker installed such as Pop-up Stopper, it may not work until after you turn off the Windows pop-up blocker. In addition, other software that requires the use of pop-ups such as WebCT and Outlook Web Access, also have features that will not work until the Windows pop-up blocker has been turned off.
  1. Launch Internet Explorer.
  2. Select Tools.
  3. Select Pop-up Blocker.
  4. Select Pop-up Blocker settings.
  5. If you want to see pop-up windows from a specific Web site, type the Web address/URL) of the site in the Address of Web site to allow box. Click Add
  6. TIP: To temporarily allow a site to display pop-ups, click the Information Bar when it notifies you that a pop-up has been blocked, select Temporarily Allow Pop-ups. More info.

Date & Time Properties (PeopleSoft error message)

In Order to use SURF, you must ensure that your computer's date and time are correct. If incorrect, you can get an error message stating that your PeopleSoft connection has expired. Please do the following to check your computer's date and time:
  1. Select Start
  2. Select Control Panel.
  3. Select Date and Time Properties.
  4. Check the clock on the right hand side and make sure that everything is correct.
  5. Check the date on the left hand side and ensure that the correct date is highlighted.
  6. Select Time Zone and ensure that your computer is in the right time zone (Pacific Time (US & Canada).
  7. Ensure the "Automatically adjust clock for daylight saving changes" box is checked.
  8. Select Apply.
  9. Select the Date and Time Properties again and manually adjust the time.
  10. Select Apply and then OK to change the settings.

PC: International Computers

Try the following if you cannot login from your international computer.

  1. Try the following to see if you can log into SURF from your Japanese PC.
  2. Go to Tools on Internet Explorer.
  3. Click on Internet Options and select Languages on the General tab.
  4. Add English(US).
  5. Delete Japanese.
  6. Restart the Internet Explorer.
