Anna in the Tropics
By Nilo Cruz
Directed by Eric Bishop
Set in the steamy confines of a Cuban cigar factory outside of Tampa, 1929, "Anna in the Tropics" revolves around the dramas of a family who own a cigar factory and the arrival of an intelligent, attractive man, Juan Jullian, who was brought in to read aloud Tolstoy's "Anna Karenina" to the workers. His arrival, however, turns their world upside down, sends the ladies swooning and makes their husbands fuming mad. Nilo Cruz's Pulitzer Prize winning play recalls a time when technology was a lesser beast and joys like fine cigars were lovingly rolled by humans.
