Online College Algebra Math 125 Summer 2008 Intro Page

If you are enrolled in Section 1240 (or are looking to add Section 1240) you are in the right place!

Welcome! My name is Mrs. Apalatea and I will be your instructor for the 6-week summer session (June 16 - July 24).

Some students may find the idea of taking this class to be somewhat intimidating. Maybe this will be your first online math class or your first math class in several years. Maybe math is not your easiest subject or you're concerned about the semester only being 6 weeks. Regardless of your past experience, I believe completing this class is absolutely attainable for any student who has the time, devotion and persistence to dedicate to the class for the intense 6-week time period - unless, of course, your learning style is inconsistent with the class

Will this class move VERY fast? Yes. But that means it will be over quickly!
Will I be overwhelmed? Maybe. Definately if you get behind!
Will I be proud of myself when the class ends? You Betcha!!!

Here are a few very important things about the class that each of you should know BEFORE you commit taking this class.

1. On-Campus Testing Requirements

As noted in the schedule of classes (both the printed version and the online version), you are required to come to campus to take one Midterm and one Final Exam. These paper-and-pencil exams will be taken in the Academic Proctoring Center (APC).

  • The Midterm must be taken no later than Tuesday July 2
  • The Final must me taken no later than Wednesday July 23 (or Thursday July 24 if absolutely necessary)

Note: If you are deployed in the military and have a Testing Officer (or a similar set up) willing to proctor your exams, please email me at least one week before class begins with that request. I will need time to contact and get information from your Testing Officer before the first day of class.

2. Mandatory Orientation

As noted in the schedule of classes (both the printed version and the online version), there is a mandatory online orientation for this class. You must complete the entire orientation no later than 11:59 pm on Monday June 16th. Students not completing the entire orientation by this deadline will be dropped from the class.

As soon as you add the class, please begin your mandatory class orientation by clicking on the arrow at the bottom of this page. Please note that part of your mandatory orientation requires you to complete some work in your required online materials (MyMathLab/Course Compass). Thus, you will not be able to complete the orientation without purchasing your required online materials.

Please feel free to go through the orientation even if you are not currently registered in the class. Just DO NOT purchase the course materials unless you are actually registered in the class. You can complete Step 1, Step 2, Step 3, and a portion of Step 4 without purchasing the required online materials.

**Important Note**As you will learn during Step 5 in your orientation, part of your orientation includes scoring at least 50% on the "Quiz on Pre-Requisite Material" in your required online materials. The "Quiz on Pre-Requisite Material" is meant to give you an idea of how well you remember material from Math 100 (mostly). Please remember that the prerequisite for this class is Math 101. This will give you an indication of whether or not you may be up to the challenge of the class or if you may need to review and take this class in another semester.

3. Crashing / Adding Once the Semester has Begun

If the class fills but you still want to be in it, please carefully follow the steps below:

  • Check Surf (online registration) regularly. People add and drop classes frequently in the weeks, days and hours leading up to the first day of class. If a spot opens up, take it! Once you are in the class, do the entire mandatory orientation.
  • While you are waiting to (hopefully) get a spot in the class, you can complete the steps in the mandatory orientation up until the actual purchase of the online materials.
  • By 2 pm on the second day of classes (June 17), I will be dropping enrolled students who have not completed their mandatory orientation. **At that point, I will post a note AT THE TOP OF THIS PAGE** letting everyone know that drops are completed and how many (if any) spaces there are available in the class.
  • IF there are any spots in the class at that point, then I will give directions on how to contact me and request permission to add. Crash requests coming in prior to my posting that day, or those requests not conforming to the instructions I post, will be ignored.

Students adding on second day or third day of class (June 17 or 18) have 24 hours to complete the entire mandatory orientation.

No students will be added after the third day of class (June 18) as your first graded Quiz is due no later than the fourth day of class (June 19).

4. A Note About Required Online Materials:

Your required online materials are called MyMathLab or called Course Compass - either name is fine.

Registration into MyMathLab will be needed in order to complete your mandatory orientation. Failure to purchase and register in this required material will result in being dropped from the class.

Please note that a PC computer running a recent Windows operating system (2000, XP, or newer) and non-dial up internet access will be needed to access MyMathLab/Course Compass. All the computers in the Math Learning Center at MiraCosta College are already configured properly. It is NOT required that you have your own computer at home for this class; you may use the computers in the MLC for your entire class. If you have technical difficulties that you are not able to resolve immediately during the semester, you may need to use the campus computers to continue taking this class.

More information about MyMathLab, as well as much more information about the class (including the assessment schedule), can be found in the mandatory orientation.
